Re: Aloha from sunny...Glasgow

If you head on up to Braemar, go out the Linn O'Dee road and hike up the Lui water towards Derry Lodge. There are routes through the hills, or up into the peaks, with Scots Pine forest, rushing burns, wild moors and loads of wildlife. Same goes for Aviemore and Rothiemurchus; lots of interesting low...

Re: Mountain Climbing for beginners - Advice!

[Edited to save space] ... I normally take the following (waiting to people to laugh) ...a mirror (in case you get a midge in your eye!) ... I'm glad I'm not the only one who takes a small mirror with me. Something in your eye which makes it painful and run can be at least as disabling as a bad bli...

Re: Lost in Lairig Ghru

...I don't understand the mentality of someone thinking there is nothing to worry about because there is a rescue service available. Getting into a situation where rescue is needed means you are in a situation you really don't want to be in, so I'd have thought anyone would want to avoid it, resuce...

Re: Lost in Lairig Ghru

50 years. Probably an appropriate place for this : BBC News - The worst mountain disaster in British history https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-59048640 Unfortunately I believe we have drifted into a condition where this situation could happen again. People rely on bits of paper, certificates i...

Re: Lost in Lairig Ghru

In that case you are the one who is lost this time :) its not the cairngorms! Bugger! You see how easy it is to get lost?! Someone call out the MRT, I thought I was back on top of the Devil's Point, now I haven't a clue... [Though please, not Aberdeen MRT, they are the only team I ever heard of who...

Re: Mountain Climbing for beginners - Advice!

Hiking up glens rather than attempting big hills helps get you started and helps the enthusiasm glands get going. The Cairngorms are good for this, Braemar in the east and Aviemore on the west side. If you drive and have a car this helps, otherwise you need to go places which have links to public tr...

Re: Lost in Lairig Ghru

Lovely picture of the moon over the high Cairngorms there, that reminds me of a time I walked from Corrour over the tops to Glen Feshie at night in snow, with all the snowy peaks laid out before me. It was a silent world but I had a tune playing incessantly in my head; "I Shall Be Released"...

Re: Glen Lyon access - new information

Yes. a very welcoming estate. The maps were there on our 1st visit in 2006. Agreed, to be applauded. Less so the fifty or so juvenile hoidlum stags who barred my way to the Giorra Dam when I was last there. Took much tooting and swearing to get them to shift. 😄 Try howling like a pack of wolves. Th...
