Re: Five Hills from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale,

I used to solo Middlefell buttress every time I waas there. Quickest way to Gimmer Crag, used it often. Must have been annoying to the novices being given their first roped rock experience when we bombed past.😸 Yes that was in the days before harnesses, helmets and rockboots - but lots of lovely Se...

Re: Five Hills from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale,

Thanks for the report Sgurr, took me right back to the start of my climbing life in my teenage years. I probably first did that round when I was sixteen, over sixty years ago and lastly in 1992. You have now spurred me on to go back and climb Bowfell again before my knees give out for good. Mention ...

Re: Banded Demoiselle ??

JFT_96 wrote:Thanks for verifying that I had the correct ID CharlesT. I thought I was correct but started to doubt myself after reading that they are not common in Scotland.

Both species are not common in Scotland but the Banded Demoiselle might be the more frequently seen.

Re: Banded Demoiselle ??

Think your id is correct. The only other similar species is the Beautiful Demoiselle which is more commonly found in the southern parts of the country. See my pic of one from May 2021 for comparison.

Re: Unwelcome visitor

Maybe perturbing for newer users that one of the busier wildlife threads is about eating the animals. Hungry work that walking lark. You can lay that one at Caberfeidh's door. These medics are so impoverished and desensitised in their early years they'll eat anything that moves and often things tha...

Re: Unwelcome visitor

I've not tried lark, any good recipes? From a reputable source 😁 "The traditional way to eat a lark is to eat it whole - bones and all. I would advise de-feathering and cooking it first. If this sounds familiar, look up "ortolan." Just think of the larks as mini-chickens once y...

Re: Unwelcome visitor

I'm reminded of the recipe for cooking coot. "Skin the coot and place in a cauldron filled with water and add a large stone. Boil until the stone becomes soft then throw away the coot and eat the stone". A bit lame, but by all accounts the Shippams fish paste factory in Norfolk used to ava...

Unwelcome visitor

A heron, bold as brass, perched on the roof of my summerhouse which overlooks my lily pond. The fish have all scarpered to the bottom and I won't see them for a couple of days. Grrrrr!!

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

The battleship HMS Royal Oak was sunk in Scapa Flow in 1939 by U boat U-47 commanded by Captain Gunther Prien. BTW I think infamous rather than famous might be applied to AH. I am bereft of ideas for a follow on and as there are so few participants in this thread now I think maybe we should put it t...
