River Nith walk

Did the Drumlanrig Castle to Burnmouth circuit, following the River Nith, on a lovely sunny day. it's a superb riverside walk with great views to the Lowther Hills on the return leg of the route. I'm just writing this to let others know about some obstacles along the way. Storm Arwen brought down a ...

Re: The rolling hill of Galloway Forest Park- a hidden gem

Great report, and some brilliant photos as well. I did the full "ridge of the awful hand" from Cornish Hill up onto Shalloch on Minnoch, and right along to Bennan via the Merrick around 2005 on one beautiful day in May...a superb outing and I've loved this part of Galloway ever sinc...

Re: Wild camp + first Winter traverse [Slioch]

Superb adventure...and as for the aurora, wow. I've never even heard of a STEVE. (Thought it must have been the name of one of your party).

Congratulations on winning the report of the month, well deserved.

Re: Stùc a' Chròin from the south east - a brilliant route!

Great report, this was the way I went many years ago, near the start of my hillwalking career...nearby Ben Ledi was my first "proper" hill.

Re: Tangled up with 2 Laws

Great looking walk. I love the hills in this area, it's where I started my hillwalking, following circuit of Dollar Law from the Manor Valley. Conscleuch Head was my first Hill walk in 2020 after the first lockdown, getting my missed Donald Tops. I've planned a short route to Greenside Law starting ...

White Top of Culreoch from the grasslands to the east

$matches[2] A usual parking place for the walk to White Top of Culreoch is at the high point on the Gatehouse of Fleet to Laurieston road. From here most folk will walk back along the road a little (south) and turn onto the track heading west. This gives access to the hill from the south, or if you...

Re: Afton Hills again, anti-clockwise

Another good report along a great route. I did this clockwise, though missing Windy Standard, due to the windmill construction, a couple of years ago when doing my Donald round. A superb group of hills. :D

Re: Coldstream and the Tweed - Storm Arwen obstructions

This caught me out too back in December. But as you say, it's possible to get past the fallen trees, some of it requiring climbing steep banks and fences.

Re: Hods Hill instead of a motorway service station

Thanks gld73, I'll likely give a return visit a miss for the time being. Though as the Daer is less than an hours drive from home, it could be a nice short afternoon walk sometime in the summer. Looks like this hill catches a few people out. I've had a look at the trip reports, and see Fife Flyer an...

Re: Routine walk adventurous descent

Turns out it was only 16 years ago I did this walk. I did in fact start at Birkhill, same as you, but continued along ridge to Bodesbeck Law. down to Potburn on the Ettrick side, then back up onto the ridge via Bught Hill, following this back to Birkhill. A long but enjoyable day out. :D 29-Wh...

Re: Hods Hill instead of a motorway service station

Enjoyed reading your report, as it's one I climbed 19 years ago when walking the Southern Upland Way...or at least I THOUGHT I'd climbed it. It was when you said you'd to leave the path and go 100m to reach the true summit, I realised I hadn't done that, just sticking to the main path. In my...

Re: Routine walk adventurous descent

Good write up for your walk. It's good to see some of these Hills I climbed many years ago, probably the late 90's. I remember having a great and very enjoyable walk along here. I did a long circuit from the Ettrick side using the Southern Upland Way for the return. The thing I remember best, is the...

Re: A steep climb but well worth the effort on Craignell

Hi Robert, enjoyed that, there are some cracking hills in the Borders. I notice your route was very similar to mine, one point not sure how you managed over 900m of ascent? I only clocked up 420m. Hi Fife Flyer, yes I used your walk report as a plan to climb this Hill, but avoided your outward rout...
