Re: Dispirited in the Mamores: Na Gruagaichean.

It's never the wrong decision to turn back in winter conditions if you don't feel safe.

I've turned back from near summits before. When you eventually return and bag them, it makes it all the more special.

Re: Walking the Coast (an Islands) of Scotland

You need to think about your criteria in regard to the islands and what you wish to include. Indeed. St. Kilda for example would be a challenge to walk the "coast" of all the islands. Hirta is do-able, but assuming you just omit the Stacs, Soay and Boreray are hard enough to land on and c...

Re: Coffee on the hills and trails

Nescafe Alta Rica (now rebranded as a variant of Gold Blend) is decent instant coffee as an alternative to freshly brewed. I decant it into a neoprene jar for use when wild camping. For day trips getting a coffee shop to fill up your vacuum flask works well. You can't beat a triple shot Gingerbread ...

Re: Waum Rydd from Cornwall Farm

Phil hopefully you can miss out or bypass the miles of tarmac; it's a quiet road but seems very monotonous. Enjoy your trip. John Thanks! I was thinking of descending the East ridge of Waun Rydd, taking the short stretch of road beneath the dam, then taking the footpath on the other side of the val...

Re: What sort of food to take on a long distance walk?

For breakfast, pancakes are wonderful! Especially with a little maple syrup Some mixes (e.g. Betty Crocker) just need water, but watch out as some need eggs which could end badly. I've thought about this recently, the possibility of making up pancake batter and keeping it in a bottle, as it would b...

Re: Testing Tops

"Tom Dubh is linked to Monadh Mor but I think it is a subsidiary top of Braeriach. Cheers." "I thought that too, managed to convince myself otherwise, now looked again and am sure you are right. Changed it over." I thought Tom Dubh used to be a Top of Braeriach but was recently r...

Re: Waum Rydd from Cornwall Farm

Useful report, thanks. I'd been planning to do Waun Rydd from Pencelli on my next visit to the Beacons.

Re: What are your favourite winter mountain walks?

My best days on the winter hills were the Ring of Steall (which you mention) and the Five Sisters of Kintail, but it depends so much on the weather and those were the classic walks on which we got great conditions with neve for cramponing. Up Ben Nevis by the waterslide route from Glen Nevis and via...

Re: Ben Alder on foot in a day

I did the same route that day, e-biking in from the Dalwhinnie station car park, setting up camp at Culra and bagging the 2 Munros then back to the tent for the night. Looking at your timing, I was probably behind you and my tent would have appeared (a green Laser Competition) when you returned to C...

Re: Walking While "ill"

Great and very moving report. I've enjoyed your walk reports over the years with Realsquiz and am very sorry for your loss. I'm now 62 and hope I manage to keep going as long as the two of you.

Re: When you bite off more than you can chew in an October d

Great report and impressive effort even if you only managed the one Munro. It seemed like conditions were heading the same way as you encountered when I was at the summit of Geal Charn last June, so I also bailed out on the other two. I was only doing them from Culra though, rather than the other si...

Re: Autumn in Glen Tilt

Almost went rushing out to get the autumn colours, then clocked it was LAST. not this, year. Super photos. Thanks, Sgurr. I'm afraid it takes me a long time to sort out and process all those photos and post the best ones to Flickr, then write the report. Hopefully the autumn colours are beginning t...

Re: Autumn in Glen Tilt

Some lovely autumnal colours. Pity about Beinn Dearg but a good result nonetheless. I sometimes think travelling from Glasgow is long enough but can't imagine how much harder it would be from London. Not many to go now though - cheers :) Thanks, Rockhopper. I eventually bagged Beinn Dearg from Glen...

Autumn in Glen Tilt

I have been going up to Scotland to bag Munros at the end of May and/or beginning of June every year from 1988. For a number of years I also bagged Winter Munros in February, and I have made occasional trips at other times, but never in the Autumn. Concerns re midges and other insects, stalking rest...

Re: Second gate in strathfarrar

The notice has probably been drafted by their lawyers to make it clear that vehicular access is by permission only, so we can't obtain a right of way by prescription (use over a long period of time). Seems advisable given they're a different landowner from the one controlling access at the entrance....
