Re: WHW 6 days itinerary ideas

33 and fit? Do it in 5 days. Balmaha, Beinglas, Bridge of Orchy, Kinlochleven for your overnighters, breaks it up nicely, 2 long dull days to get the legs going, before it gets scenic.

Re: Water bottle pouches

You could use a couple of those silicon charity wristbands to pop over the body, stop it swinging.

Re: Water bottle pouches

Thanks for your post AyrshireAlps, I'll have a look at the sierra designs pouches. The pouches are integral to the pack, so unless you wanna buy a new pack.... They are such a good design, I dunno why more brands don't follow suit, they must add about 40g to pack weight, but add 2kg of potential ca...

Re: Water bottle pouches

The ones on the likes of the sierra designs packs are excellent, purposefully designed and made to hold bottles, rock solid. I had the OMM ones and just couldn't really get on with them, hard to keep them in the right position on the strap without something like a cable tie to help, and the bottle w...

Re: Resistance training, improving fitness for hiking event?

Walk the ups, run the downs, running downhill gives you a great workout, brillant for all over leg strength, ankles in particular, really bulletproofs them like nothing else.

Re: Resistance training, improving fitness for hiking event?

I'll disagree, I mountain biked for nigh on 20 years, both for fun and a bit of racing, it never really translated much into my hillwalking or hill running, other than endurance/stamina.

And I know A LOT of fat MTBers :D

Re: Resistance training, improving fitness for hiking event?

Yes, but all of those examples are the same day, post exercise. The benefits of nutrition, hydration and a good nights sleep are your best friend. Hill fitness comes after a few days IME, and the strength stuff will help no end. If you think about it, lots of hill walking is a series of lunges, so b...

Re: Resistance training, improving fitness for hiking event?

Don't worry about the fatigue thing, in my experience after a few days yout body adapts, although a rest day is great for the spirits, something to aim at!. Kettlebells are the best bang for buck full body routine about IME. You can start off using really light bells, even just bodyweight for some e...

Re: Advice wanted - overnight backpack

I've had both the flex capacitor and the exos, FC is far comfier, weight is well distributed, and the bottle holders are superb.

All packs of that size should have those bottle holders!.

Re: Curlywee & Lamachan

Best to use it in the morning, they tend to run out of data in the afternoon, and it shuts down!.

Re: Curlywee & Lamachan

Satellite images is your friend in these cases, vast areas of land have been felled here in the last few years. It's the worst of surfaces to walk on, downright dangerous.

Where's the path is a great site for equating OS maps features to real world.

Re: Curlywee & Lamachan

I've done them from the Glen trool side, and from the Newton Stewart side, the NS approach is a more pleasant option, although the WH approach on the Trool side starts a wee bit further east than I did, I went up the side of Sheil burn which is not something I'm looking to repeat ever again!.

Re: GPS device

Some organisers are strict, most aren't. Jedburgh 3 peaks was an odd one, kit check at 17 miles in, bonkers.

If you put the phone in flight mode, it'll last days, never mind one ultra mate.
