Re: Live entertainment from otters in Caledonian canal

Wow, the otters are supercute! Can I have one of them as a pet? :D :D :D

Inverness could be called "The Venice of the far north". We have the river, the canal, the loch and the seaside. Just need the gondoliers!

Meowing on Meall na Faochaig

Two weeks ago when we strolled casually along Gleann Meinich, we discussed a possible traverse of Meall na Faochaig using this glen as a descent route. We had climbed the Graham before as well as some of its outlying tops, but we always dropped down to the south, to Loch Beannacharain. The new idea ...

Affric-an Corbett

A wonderful weekend of high pressure weather has arrived and for us it meant only one thing: the higher hills! I was a bit reluctant to go up the Affric Munros, simply because they are tough, long walks and I still wasn't sure if my knee could cope with so much pressure. But a nice Corbett, why not?...

A wander below Salamander

Having lived in Beauly for nearly two decades, strangely, we never wandered into Gleann Meinich, despite it having a good track for over 6km. Somehow we always found what we thought were more interesting areas to investigate. Only last year when we repeated Meall na Faochaig, sitting on the summit, ...

Re: Music while you walk

I like listening to songs or podcasts when I go jogging, but not on the hills. The mountains play their own music :D

When walking with another person (my husband in most cases) I feel it would be rude to plug my ears with headphones. Even if sometimes we walk for miles without saying anything.

Last of the winter wonderland

Originally we intended to climb Carn nam Bad on Saturday, but forecast was too cold and windy to our taste so we ended up with our Boris walk up Torr Breac, a local 360m hill. We had visited it many times during last spring lockdown, the top is a great viewpoint and we found some interesting ancient...

Just another windfarm story...

I always fancied Meall a'Chrathaich in winter conditions, but the recent big dump of snow makes walking so difficult that I didn't even dare suggesting it to Kevin; he himself came up with the shorter version of the Corrimony approach, a walk which we had done several times before. We hoped to visit...

Re: What CAN you do on a hill near CANnich?

Great pictures BP. That looked like a tough day though. Some great weather just now - good to see folk getting out on the hills ...... wish it was me :( All the best. Thanks :D We try to get out and every weekend, Kevin needs the hills badly after five days of mad work... The delivery sector has go...

Re: What CAN you do on a hill near CANnich?

I did this one in the snow last January, though not as deep snow as you had. I still managed to end up waist deep at one point, don't know if there were snow filled hags in the dip between the summit and the adjoining top? (Not using GRS and not getting my map out I just tried to head for what look...

Re: Beautiful snowy escape

Lovely :D A handy little mountain for a shorter day. Hopefully your long Covid will pack up and go away for good very soon! We considered this route last Sunday but decided it would be too much deep snow now, went to Corrimony instead and walked to the bothy. We were lucky someone had driven to the ...

What CAN you do on a hill near CANnich?

...early in the morning? Well, you can practice snow-swimming, that's for sure!  The start of the easiest route up Carn Gorm is only about 20 miles from Beauly so we decided it was close enough and we gave ourselves an absolution to re-visit this Graham. We were curious about the amount o...

Re: Carn na Coinnich: Italian meringue

The Fannichs on the horizon from the final climb to the summit: $matches[2] We used the standard route to reach the top and had a short break by the trig point: $matches[2] If weather smiles, Strathfarrar Munros can be seen from the summit, they are located just across Glen Orrin to the south: $matc...
