A short week of Munros

More as an aid to those going out this weekend than walk reports: Sun 24th Beinn Bhuidhe - Lot of deep soft snow in upper corrie and getting onto the ridge was a slog in soft snow. Ridge icy and high winds made me detour and approach from leeward. Should be ok now winds have dropped. Crampons advisa...

Re: Donald Trump Hotel Axed

Well said. The sooner he packs in the whole idea the better, though I guess it would take a court order to get him to re-instate the land he has desecrated and to put right the injuries to the local people. The man is the worst sort of predatory developer. The UK does not need him.

Re: Third time lucky on the illusive Beinn Bhuidhe

Hi Pete. Cracked it yesterday, 24th. Much soft snow on lower areas, harder higher up and crampons needed for the final assault. Howling gale reduced final steps to the cairn on all fours, touch and depart pronto down the leeward side. Coos absent unfortunately, so no friendly banter. Granny stopper ...

Re: Westie Munro

I was on Beinn Bhuidhe yesterday and apart from the howling gale which blew my rucksack off the bealach while I was putting crampons on before tackling the icy ridge, there was a lot of deep soft snow lower down. Unlikely this will clear anytime soon and your Westie might struggle with this and gett...

Re: Best ever day to do Snowdon?

Prince Obolensky was Russian by birth and played RU for England in 1936 scoring a brilliant try in a first defeat of the All Blacks, so nothing new there. Perhaps we could get some chunky Ruskies to make up a proper front row!

Re: Third time lucky on the illusive Beinn Bhuidhe

Great report and pics. I too had to retreat off this hill earlier this year from below the ridge when thick cloud and snow blanked it out. Retreated down the other side of the burn which was horribly boggy lower down and not to be recommended. Planning a second crack next week and hope not to need a...

Re: Best ever day to do Snowdon?

Perhaps when England have a front row worthy of the name they might be able to beat Wales. Until then they will continue to get slaughtered up front as on Saturday.

Re: Breaking news: Cumbria County Council have said no to th

As a resident of Hampshire who was born near and spent my formative years in the Lake District, I refuse to be offended by anti-South bias - it may not be mountainous, but it does have some grand walking country. And storing nuclear waste in chalk would not be a good idea. From my memory of school g...

Re: Alas, poor Robin

Could be window collision. Had three greenfinches dead from this at home as a result of Sparrowhawk around the bird feeders. Really puts the wind up them.

Re: Anyone up for a hill on Wednesday 30th Jan?

Howling gale on Ben Chonzie as predicted plus a brief whiteout on approach to summit. Horrible soft snow lower down plus an engineer had decided to open the dam to release excess water just as I arrived producing raging torrent across the track! On plus side it stayed dry. Why do we do this?

Re: Anyone up for a hill on Wednesday 30th Jan?

If it helps I did Ben Vane today. Deep but patchy unconsolidated snow higher up and strong westerly . Took at least 2 hrs longer than normal. Crampons not needed but ice axe was a help. Planning to do Ben Chonzie tomorrow -at least it's not so steep.

Re: Whos Munro bagging this weekend?

Noting the above comments on avalanche risk, what are anyone's thoughts on Ben Lui via Stob Garbh and possibly the other three munros nearby on Tues or Wed next?
