found: dark Berghaus fleece, Ben Cruachan dam area

I saw a dark Berghaus fleecy jacket by the path going up to the Ben Cruachan dam from the A85. I left it in situ because it wasn't too far from the road, in case its owner was going to come back to retrieve it. (I can send photo.)

Re: Falls of Cruachan parking

Thank you Bustlung for starting this thread. And in case anyone's wondering, that Hollow Mountain car park that hillwalkers are now redirected to has a sign saying 'Gate will be locked at 4.45pm'. That left us rushing down from Ben Cruachan, as we didn't want to spend the night in our car locked int...

Re: Glen Lochay conditions/Beinn Heasgarnich descent

I came off Beinn Heasgarnaich the traditional way, i.e. heading east from the summit until I reached that road. I did that because I had a bike waiting by the road (the ride down to Kenknock Farm was fab!), and because it looked less steep than a descent due south from the summit. (The contour lines...

Re: Beinn Eibhinn and Aonach Beag from the north

Interesting walk report. I too did Beinn Eibhinn from the north, also with a mountain bike, I'd definitely recommend this route to anyone who can't fit too many summits into a Ben Alder round undertaken from Dalwhinnie.

Re: Relying on streams for water - planning

I've drinking from burns/streams on almost every walk for the last 20 years and never had any nasty reactions. If I'm heading for an area with little water, I also take some types of food which are lighter to carry than water and have a great thirst-quenching effect: tangerines, grapes, other pieces...

Re: Advice for a newbie!

You might like to take a thermos flask with coffee / tea / soup. The weather is not great at the moment, and having a hot drink will make you feel a lot better up some windswept mountain.

Re: Beinn Ìme by the Backdoor

PS My notes for this mountain and this route read as follows:

Beinn Ime, 18/07/17, via Coire Croe, very awkward sloping terrain, no path, assymetric blisters; next to no mobile reception all day

Re: Beinn Ìme by the Backdoor

Great walk report. I too did Ben Ime from this less conventional side. Free parking, as you point out. Yes, those annoying little gullies; I too found it quite hard-going. On the other hand, I didn't meet anyone else up that side of the mountain, so if you're after solitude, that route may be for yo...

Re: Early morning places to eat

Crianlarich Londis? 7.30am, I think? I forget whether they serve hot drinks, but they have bakery goods (not sure what time that arrives though). Very friendly service in that shop, so a vote for them.

Re: Deer Ked countermeasures

There were hundreds of them in Glen Ceitlin a couple of weeks ago - really gross. I was covered in DEET from head to toe and it didn't make any difference. Apparently they locate you by sensing your body heat, so I put my jacket hood up and that reduced the number of keds landing on me. It was a ver...

Re: Losing motivation to visit the hills

Message to Emily: not sure if this helps in your particular case, but the big scary groups of mountains will seem less worrying if broken up into shorter trips. I did the Ben Alder group in three daytrips, across three years: 1) daytrip bike-and-hike from Dalwhinnie, 2 summits; 2) daytrip bike-and-h...

Re: Ghastly error gives a big challenge!!!

Well done for writing this up. Not to worry - we've all done things like that! And at the end of June, you had a lot of daylight left to correct your error. A great walk report to read also for younger hillwalkers. (Churchill once said that it's important to make those errors early in life fro...
