Beinn a' Bhuird via Glen Quoich question

Last time I was up Glen Quoich the path was washed away at a point about 3km up the glen. This was last summer. Does anyone know the current condition of the path and whether it is possible to take mountain bikes past this point? Just looking at a plan B for the weekend (plan A is to camp up at the ...

Re: Good Munro For Beginner Close To Aberdeen?

Might I suggest that the OP joins a local Hillwalking or mountaineering club in order to gain some experience and lessen the risk of coming to grief? There are several to choose from in Aberdeen. It's a great way to safely learn hillcraft.

Re: Belts.

You would need to spend a few quid to buy one from McRostie https://www.mcrostie.co.uk/product-category/belts/mens-belts/ but their belts are gorgeous. They will also make belts individually to fit if you need a non standard option. My DH was so taken with mine that he bought one of their ready mad...

Re: Ring of steall with dog

Unless the river is in spate you can usually splosh across it a short distance upstream from the bridge. You could probably carry your dog across without much bother. You may want to take your socks/boots off to cross the river as I've found it generally above boot height. If you do need to use the ...

Re: Good Munro For Beginner Close To Aberdeen?

Most of the White Mounth hills, the Glen Shee hills and some of the southern Cairngorms are accessible as day walks from Aberdeen. Mount Keen is straightforward but best tackled with the aid of a bicycle if approached from the north. I'd suggest some of the Glen Shee hills. Càrn an Tuirc and Cairn o...

Re: FIONN BHEINN

You have over 8 hours between those two trains. Plenty of time to climb Fionn Bheinn. In fact, you could climb it twice in that time.

Re: Plantar Fasciitis

I had plantar fasciitis a couple of years ago and found that there are two approaches to treating it, but the first step is common to both, and unfortunately it is to rest your feet as much as possible until the foot or feet have healed. This could take several months and unfortunately means no hill...

Re: how far can you cycle past Bynack More towards Loch Etch

I was there last weekend, wishing I had taken my bike, and noted that you could cycle to the bridge over the Nethy. A bike would probably be more bother than it's worth beyond that.

Re: White Mounth Munros - Drinking water

There's reliable water at the Fox Cairn Well (grid ref 263 857), good for filing up with drinking water for the final pull up the steep section to follow, assuming you are going anticlockwise. If travelling clockwise, the last reliable water is at the head of Loch Muick. Other than that, it will be ...

Re: West Highland Way and Steall Falls

*Snip* The route suggested by Dopeyloser is a good option also though the path shown on the map into Glen Nevis below Binnein Beag is hard to follow on the ground and goes in the wrong direction in general. It's a far easier route but not as good as the route over the tops. Another thing to conside...

Re: Tent question

I don't own either tent but do own Terra Nova Laser Comps (1&2), which are the expensive versions of the Zephyros, so I can only talk generally, not about the details. I think the Laser Comp are great little tents, the one man being perfectly big enough and weatherproof enough for me. For me, we...

Re: West Highland Way and Steall Falls

What about up the Ben by tourist path, down CMD arete to the route across to Aonach Mor ( this is the bit I HAVEN'T done), down Coire Giubhsachan (which I've walked UP to from Steall Meadows ) into Glen Nevis, and then out past the falls... A long day, but feasible? I've seen people take that route...

I can see this working in wet but fairly calm conditions, not sure what it would be like in a Cairngorm gale!

True. It's more suited to low level long distance type of walks rather than high level summit bagging kind of walks.

Re: Waterproof trousers for a short gal

Are you planning on camping out during your trip or are you just doing day hikes and staying in accommodation overnight? If it's the latter, then you may not really need waterproof trousers unless you're the sort who goes out whatever the weather. Also, the gaiters and rain skirt idea is actually no...

Re: How to compute the length of a walk

I've never had a map measurer. I have always just estimated by counting grid squares!
