Re: TN Laser comp 1, MSR Freelite 1 or Nordisk Telemark?

I took the Terra Nova Laser Comp 1 on the John Muir Trail in the High Sierra. Superb tent. No problems putting it up, no condensation problems. Big enough to bring your pack inside and the flysheet overlap is big enough to leave your boots under cover if you don't want them inside the tent with you....

Re: Import Duties

I'm waiting with bated breath for a replacement walking pole section from Black Diamond. I posted about a bent walking pole on another thread and joked about the section coming from Austria and me coming on here. The Black Diamond site was marked as UK, the pole section was priced in £s, my credit ...

Re: Long distance with toddler

The John Muir Way is a good shout. JMW has a cycle route alternative, but from memory the bits avoided by the cycle alternative would still be possible with a buggy. It's not all flat btw, but is by no means mountainous. Combining the Forth & Clyde canal with the Union Canal and potentially Wate...

Re: WH Summer Meet - Inverie 10-12 July 2020 NOW 8-10 JULY 2

If any spaces come available I'd be happy to take one. Not that I know what I'll be doing in July 2022, but it would be nice to be in Inverie. Please add me to the waiting list. If spaces don't free up you could still come along and camp :) or there are also other places to stay in Inverie if campi...

Re: The edge of nowhere

The question of remoteness is a personal thing and depends on what you look for to get comfort. For me the feeling of remoteness comes when I know that it's a day or so to walk to get to somewhere with inhabitants and when I see somewhere featureless with a distant horizon and big skies. For me it's...

Re: Unbending a walking pole

Thanks for all the help and advice. I discovered that Black Diamond do replacement middle sections. Only £10 although post and packing added another £8.95. At least it's cheaper than replacing the pair. Now all I have to worry about is whether it comes from Austria and I have to contribute to the &q...

Unbending a walking pole

Is it possible to unbend a walking pole? I fell on top of my extended walking pole and it now has a slight bend in the middle section. The pole will still work and isn't noticeable when walking, but it is getting near impossible to use the telescopic shortening. They are Black Diamond Trail poles wh...

Re: Long distance walks under new lockdown guidelines

But the point is that it is against the law. Exercise and recreation are reasonable excuses, can you find a definition of recreation that would exclude camping? As far as I can see you can go camping within your LA area. My point was that going outside your LA area is against the law. Recreation is...

Re: Long distance walks under new lockdown guidelines

I think there is no doubt that going for a walk and a camp solo or with friends and maintaining a respectable distance is no risk of catching Covid or of passing it on. So provided you take good precautions on the journey there and don't inconvenience others by getting yourself into trouble and havi...

Re: Long distance walks under new lockdown guidelines

Like I say, I would love to engage in a legal argument as some bar room banter. But it's all too depressingly real and serious. If I was a QC (I'm far from that btw  ) I'd take a brief on either side of the exercise/ recreation argument.

Meanwhile I'll expect the worst and hope for the best.

Re: Long distance walks under new lockdown guidelines

So it may be that starting 5 April, it is technically legal to undertake solo multi-day wild-camping walks IF one starts within 5 miles of the LA and returns to the same place. It's legal to do that now. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ssi/2020/344/schedule/5/2021-02-19 I'm not one to p* in anyone's...
