Re: Lank Rigg: Mother Goddess of the Earth

I couldn't remember which way I'd gone, but it appears to have been your route 1 - except that in order to be properly acclimatised I went OVER Dent and Flat Fell from the bus stop. I also crossed the Calder with bare feet! Yes that was a fine report and a very unusual route! In fact you could also...

Re: Lank Rigg: Mother Goddess of the Earth

Yes I forgot about the famous compressor route  This raises a number of important climbing ethics issues. Suppose a large team laid siege to the hill and built a boardwalk over the bogs and a bridge over the Calder, would that class as aid climbing? This may sound like boasting, but I've always...

Lank Rigg: Mother Goddess of the Earth

LR view from W.jpg I have climbed Lank Rigg on about 15 occasions, each time 'alpine style', in a single 2 hour round trip without bottled oxygen or sherpa support. I am the Kenton Cool of Lank Rigg, which makes me the primary authority around these parts. I have put together a summary of the main ...

Re: Norway's Highest Mountain - the Giant that is Galdhopigg

Great report, thanks for sharing. £25 sounds remarkably cheap for a guided climb. Probably ten times less than you'd pay in the alps, but the group numbers are ten times bigger. I assume the snow never melts on the glacier, meaning it is 'wet' all year round and you need to be roped up. If the glaci...

Re: Harter Fell - a couple of endings

A fine hill indeed, although I'm slightly confused at how you two have manged to do the same route with different amounts of ascent (424 m vs 350 m). Think you need to coordinate your walk reports better  https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=100705

Ultraviolence

Nasty, dangerous business, the ultras. It's a peak bagging list nobody has any hope of completing, but you might just get killed trying. There are 108 ultra prominant peaks in Europe, including 16 in mainland France and Switzerland. Of these, only Puy de Sancy (1886 m) could reasonably be considered...

Re: Loughrigg - Stairway to Hell!

Looks alright to me :D I think 'hell' would be when there are hoards of daytrippers all over the place but it looks like you had it almost to yourself. I especially like the name 'Scroggs cottage'

Re: Coniston Old Man and 5 neighbours

Sometimes I wonder if Alteknacker deliberately choses his route to trace out some object or animal. Often it's a set of bagpipes or a jellyfish but this time the GPS route looks like a skinny navel gazing dinosaur.

Re: Quickie up Holme Fell, the hard way

 Holme Fell is great, although you seem to have climbed it the easy way. There's a really nice grade 2 scramble up the South West corner, which is relatively safe and unexposed. The grade probably reflects the difficulty in route finding at some points. There's a huge cave somewhere round here...

Re: An idiot (me) on a mountain

Nice report. I was waiting for the bit where you justify calling yourself an 'idiot' but it never came. Sounds like you did everything right
