Re: Grivel Monte Rosa with Salomon Quest?

I think it's unlikely you will damage the crampons over the course of a few days. My advice would be: - Make sure that the crampons are fitted as well as possible - vigourous shaking should not dislodge them. - Don't venture onto terrain when a crampon popping off a boot would be a serious problem. ...

Re: Wild camp Ben Hope / Ben Klibreck?

Thanks! Looks nice and grassy up there and perfect for a wildcamp. Is there likely to be snow and ice up top that time of year- just wondering if we will need the crampons and axe. It might well be snow covered at that height, though. I would definitely pack axe and crampons in the car and decide w...

Re: Monster cairn & not even on the summit!

The large cairn marking the lower top of East Cairn Hill was reached and it really is one the biggest cairns I have seen, not quite sure why the lower top should have such a huge construction It's a prehistoric burial cairn: I guess the builders must have forgotten to take their differential GPS up...

Re: Wild camp Ben Hope / Ben Klibreck?

We are planning to wild camp part way up either Hope or Klibreck to summit in the morning to watch the partial solar eclipse on 20th March. Anyone had any experience of wild camping on the way up of either- what hill would you choose to go for a wild camp? If it's not too windy then the col between...

Re: Hello, and some advice appreciated

Sgurr wrote:Nobody knows what March weather will be like. Could be Baltic, could be Mediterranean

Well that's true, but the chances of being able to do the bigger hills safely in early March without axe and crampons
aren't very good, I'm afraid.

Re: Help needed for first trip Loch Lomond and glencoe

gamemaster84 wrote:And does anyone know a good scenic beach near Oban?

Try:
Ganavan, about 3km north of Oban,
or
Tralee, about 12km north of Oban, near Benderloch on the A828.

Re: Ben Wyvis info?

Still a fair bit of snow above 700m in Torridon: see http://torridonblog.sais.gov.uk/2015/02/sunshine-then-showers/ Can't see Wyvis being much different. Freeze/thaw cycles over the next few days, but summits are likely to accumulate some fresh snow.

Re: The Place of Flagstones (An Leacainn)

Interesting translation - although leac = flagstone in Gaelic, leacainn or leacann translates as a broad slope or side of a hill, which seems a bit more likely in the context!

Re: ladies mountain boots size 3

Looks like some Scarpa and La Sportiva models start at EU 36 which is UK 3.5: e.g. http://www.scarpa.co.uk/mountain/manta-pro-gtx-wms/

Re: Snow Conditions Glen Orrin /Glenuig

I think there will be still substantial patches of snow above about 450m just now. We are due a thaw this week, but after that anything could happen - you'll just need to check the forecasts nearer the time, I'm afraid.

Re: Advice on walk choice on Skye

Apart from Bruch na Frithe the two other Munros that can be reached without any exposed scrambling are Blaven and Sgurr na Banachdich. Other good options which attract less bad weather/cloud than the main Cuillin ridge include: The Eastern Red Hills: http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/beinnnacaille...
