Re: hiking vs mountaineering boots

I've had a pair of Mantas for about two years now and I wear them all year round. My feet do start to feel it eventually given the weight of them but I've put them into all sorts of bogs, peat hags and rivers and my feet have always remained dry. I'm a bit jealous of all of you getting them for a lo...

Re: Hills you haven't climbed

Beinn Fhionnlaidh (Glen Etive) - Attempted this a few months ago and initially it was pleasant but the weather turned foul quite quickly. I had an involuntary slide down the hill around the 700 metre mark so made the decision to bail out. Meall nan Tarmachan - On New Years day I headed up whilst eve...

Re: A9 average speed cameras

I was up and down there on Saturday and that was the first time I had seen them. The road up wasn't too bad as I had left the house at 5am but the way back was a lot slower. In my limited experience of that road, the problem isn't speeding but people performing dangerous overtaking manoeuvres to get...

Re: Mullach Clach a' Bhlair & Sgor Gaoith

Yesterday was definitely a great day to be out and I fancy doing these two soon. I got stuck in those roadworks and between the "cut in at the cones brigade" and the heat they weren't much fun.

Re: An idle walk.

That was indeed me gaffr. It was good to meet you and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your day. I have to say I preferred the tranquil summit of Macdui as opposed to the relative madness of Cairn Gorm :D It was a really good day for it and I was surprised at how much snow is left. Hopefully I see you...

Re: Ben Cruachan and then Oh No

I did those two in similar weather to you and getting to the top of Ben Cruachan was harder work than I had anticipated. I didn't feel the slabs were too tricky but if you're not sure then it's the right decision to head home.

At least when you go back you'll be able to add on the Corbett

Re: iPhone GPS app for off-line use?

I've used Viewranger for a couple of years now and it has yet to let me down. The GPS is very accurate and it's simple to load routes from on here on to the maps. I would highly recommend it and the record track feature is very good for seeing how far you've walked, how much ascent you've made, and s...

Re: Transport between start and end of the "Lawers 5"

I did the 5 of them from the Beinn Ghlas car park and after reaching the summit of Meall Greigh, I dropped down to the track which runs around Ben Lawers. That was easy enough but the track stops so I ended up traversing the side of Beinn Ghlas which wasn't much fun. I would do them that way again b...

Re: CMD arete

I got a brief glance at it on Wednesday when driving back into Spean Bridge and it looked as if there was still a lot of snow on it. The cloud was quite low but it lifted for a moment or two and the upper slopes were white.

Re: where are you off to this weekend?

I had a great Saturday morning on Beinn Chaorach which was my first hill in quite a while. the weather was good, the views excellent and I had the hill to myself which I quite enjoy. the only downside was the drive up and down the A82  I have the week off work so tomorrow I'm planning to do Gl...

Re: What's Your New Years Aspirations?

I got married and moved house last year so the hills took a back seat from April onwards. I really want to get myself out more this year and try do some of the ones further North as I'm running out of hills close to home.

Re: The heat

I don't function well in the heat so I would rather wait until it cools down before heading out. The sooner that big yellow thing goes away the better 8)

Re: Music with a hill reference in the title....

It doesn't strictly have hill or mountain in the title but anytime I climb a hill and the top is in clag, I get reminded of Breaking Into Heaven by The Stone Roses.

Kudos to Klaasloopt for mentioning Teenage Fanclub as they're one of my favourite bands 8)

A Couple of Lumps and a Bump

The hills at Drumochter get a bad press at times but being in the mood for something not too strenuous, I decided to go for the two hills west of the A9 in this area that I hadn't done. Their neighbours Geal Charn and A'Mharconaich had been climbed in March in conditions that deteriorated into a com...
