Re: Liathach for an intermediate.

Liathach should be fine for you, any or all of the pinnacles can be avoided by a bypass path. So its entirely up to you what to do or what to avoid. The route off Spidean (the first Munro) down to the start of the pinnacles, if doing it the usual route East to West, it is best to stick to the crest,...

Re: Newbie equipment advice

easiest way for me to advise is to tell you what's in my rucksack for a standard day, not winter. Rucksack. Berghaus Freeflow 38 + 8 Waterproof jacket: Berghaus Mera Peak Waterproof Trousers: Rab Event Windproof jacket (not waterproof) Insulated jacket: Montane Prism (I think) Gloves + spare set ( w...

Re: River conditions - Fisherfield Six (5)

If you walk in from Inverlael, near Kinlochewe you won't have to cross any :D

Re: Which size of rucksack for a newbie hill climber

Very much a personal taste, but mine is Berghaus Freeflow 35 + 8. That's fits waterproofs, insulated jacket, windproof jacket, lunch, and in one pocket all the bits, headtorch, batteries, gloves, beanie. Top pocket for compass, etc. Also can depend on whether you want a bladder. Some like these so y...

Re: Buachaille Etive Mor...advice for a newbie.

The route up the Corrie is on a well worn path, but it zig zags about near the top, but if you lose it, just kep in mind (GPS Waypoint maybe) the final objective at the lip. The rest is pretty straightforward as you'll be on a ridge to one degree or another so it should be fairly obvious, given the ...

Re: Tackling Skye

My advice would be to go explore yourself first. It may depend on how convenient it is for you to go to Skye and if you're looking to just get the munros bagged, so to speak. If the latter then a Guide may be best. If you're happy to accept that you may not always come away with a summit in the bag,...

Re: Moments to remember

You certainly packed a lot into your holiday, with wonderful photos and memories. Torridon in that weather is a bonus. I guess given I originally lived in London I would be more local than you but it took me 40 years to complete the Munro's so you should be able to trim that down to 30, even with on...

Re: Beinn Liath Mhor, an epic adventure and treasured memory

I have to agree it was an absolutely epic...but then most of our adventures are Spidey :). You forgot to mention the bottle of Macallan that survived the avalanche!! Travis is now retired from the hills and my new adventured buddy Henry will perhaps be braver or even if he's not, I can carry him ov...

Re: Beinn Liath Mhor, an epic adventure and treasured memory

Heck, that really was epic, especially for The Marine! I freely admit to being quite terrified of avalanches, and hence cautious to the point of irrationality in potential avalanche territory! You were very bold to set out so late... But it all turned out well, notwithstanding the long walk back in...

Re: The 1:25,000 maps on here.

I've just checked and if I pick a Walk, in this case I picked the Lairig Ghru, click on the Route Map and I can zoom in to the full 1:25k scale, just as I can on the GPS Planner. As I understand it, you have to be registered on the site, which you clearly are as you're posting, and you have to be lo...

Re: Buachaille Etive Mor...advice for a newbie.

if you are going by the standard route as per the walk description on this site, it shouldn't present any difficulties. Its straightforward up via Coire na Tulaich on a path, which steepens over rough ground near the top of the col, but nothing serious. On return from Stob na Broige, you can retrace...

Re: The 1:25,000 maps on here.

When you say the ones under GPS heading do you mean the GPS Planner ? I've looked at the GPS Planner, whch I use a fair bit and it shows OS at 1:25k scale.

Just looked at a walk too and its the same ???

Re: Winter Traverse Cairngorms

After just typing all my thoughts, something went wrong and its gone    So second try. Some has been said but here goes. 1. Already mentioned but weather and notably wind. Proposed camping spots may need to be changed depending on the conditions, as 4 season or not, a tent will not wi...
