Re: Cameron's Viewpoint - have outdoor mags had their day?

I buy both TGO and Trail, but being relatively new to walking I find the content reasonably fresh and not too repetitive (yet). I have to say that TGO is impossible to find outside of WHSmith, whereas Trail is much more accessible. I still think there is a place for both publications and room for th...

Re: Cheap mountain boots: Berghaus Terazed or karrimor alpin

The Alpiniste stuff Karrimor is generally quite good. It's not like the low quality cheap tat they usually knock out. Not sure about the boots, but the Alpiniste jackets are eVent are unbelievably good value. I have pair of Berghaus Tarazed and they are good stiff boots very suited rough terrain, bu...

Re: Looking for a good guide book

I find most Munro guidebooks a bit bland tbh, and mostly they are huge great big slabs of books. Not sure if some of the smaller regional books are much better.

I have certainly never found anything as idiosyncratic and interesting as Wanwright's PGs for the Lake District.

Re: Lake district.

Midges generally not a problem. Though I did get eaten alive on Skiddaw recently.

You certainly don't need mossie nets or anything in my experience.

Skiddaw via Ullock Pike

our_route.gpx I had originally intending to do a round involving Glaramara and Great End last weekend, but a lack of time from my walking partner meant we had to find a shorter walk instead. Skiddaw via Ullock Pike had been on my list for a long time, so we decided on this instead as we could knock...

Re: Cnicht

Looks a great little walk. I think this might be a good starting point for my walking in Wales (when I get round to it in 20 years or something ;))

An Old Man and his friends - The Coniston Fells

our_route.gpx A rare sunny weekend in Cumbria meant it was time for me to finally do a walk I had planned last October. I have walked almost exclusively in the North and West of the park, so it was time to break my duck in the Southern Fells. An early start saw us heading for the Walna Scar road in...

St Bees to Sandwith on the C2C

Not quite in the Lake District but close enough. This wasn't the start of a C2C, but a walk with the Wainwright Society as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the Coast to Coast. I slight change of tack for me this, but very local to my house and an enjoyable walk if you are ever kicking you...

Castle Crag

our_route.gpx We set off from Grange to climb Castle Crag, but for som reason didn't bother to properly check the start of the route and managed to walk about a mile along the road to Rosthwaite insitead of following the path up to Hollows Farm campsite. Once we discovered the error we headed back ...

Re: Went Off Course in Dense Fog (Compass / Map Advice, Plea

Navigating in thick fog can be very difficult. You basically have walk on a bearing and micro-navigate. You can us grid north, but aim off, as magnetic north is a couple of degrees west of grid north. This is a good easy to understand guide to navigating - http://happyhiker.co.uk/FindingYourway/Hiki...

Re: Col vs Bealach

We say col a lot in Cumbria (well I do anyway). Hause is very common on the maps, but doesn't really get used a lot in speech unless specifically naming the hause. Is it pronounced "house" btw. I always say haws, which is blatantly wrong I realise :D
