Re: Winter hardshell: Jottnar Odin, or Arcteryx Alpha AR?

I got the Jottnar Odin in a recent sale (paid under £300). It's an awesome piece of kit. I've not been exposed to extreme weather since I bought it, but it feels great and I've no doubts it will cope with whatever gets thrown at it.

Re: Food suggestions

Soreen Malt loaf. Moist enough to eat when you're active, good calorie count, doesn't need to be cooked, cheap and the wrapping usually has a reseal function to keep the bits you don't eat fresh.

Re: Top Man

I was aiming to do all of them within a 50 year span, which means finishing a year from now at age 64. A weather wash out on Skye followed by missing a couple of trips due to catching Covid then missing July with the after effects of Covid meant that I was giving up on making it within 50 years. Ha...

Re: Liathach

I hired a guide for Liathach. AE I did when I was young, fit and no sense of self preservation. I was also rock climbing at the time. Having a guide and being roped up took the fear out of it and made it a hassle free, thoroughly enjoyable, absolute delight of a day. The first roped up move was a fa...

Re: electric cars

The obvious solution would be to move to Scotland (when I retire), but I suspect I wouldn't generate as much solar electricity as in South London. The advances in solar are incredible, potentially still harvesting energy at night!. The ultimate will be electric cars which use solar energy. There is...

Re: electric cars

My accountant has told me that the tax incentives for a business acquiring an electric car are now very advantageous. I can buy an electric car and offset the full cost against Corporation Tax in year1. Benefit in Kind is minimal. For a small business like mine that is food for thought about acquiri...

Re: electric cars

I have been giving this some thought. My 12 year old Saab 93 x-drive is going to give up on me some time and I need to plan ahead. It's already not great in terms of fuel consumption. I can get around 450 miles out of a tank of petrol which enough to do the round trip to a lot of hills from Edinburg...

Re: Thunder and Lightning very very frightning

I had a couple of thunder and lightning experiences in the High Sierra doing the John Muir Trail. The first was the day before we were due to climb Mount Whitney from Crabtree Meadow, we had arrived and set up camp after 18 consecutive days of sunshine and blue skies. Not long after arrival the thun...

Re: What dogs, are good hill dogs ?

My wife and I were idly talking about getting a dog to be with us in our old age and something which could accompany me on solo treks in the hills (is it still solo when you have a dog?). About 6 months ago I acquired a toy poodle when my elderly aunt could not look after her any more. She is deligh...

Re: Beinn a'Chlachair, Geal Charn, Creag Pitridh - route opt

I walked your route 1, but in reverse. From Luiblea out past Lubvan and right to the end of Beinn a Chlachair. Then down the ENE ridge and back down the path to Luiblea. It's a longer route, but satisfying. The climb is straightforward and a consistent gradient. Possibly a bit tedious except you hav...

Re: Walk Highland map issue

It's nice to see a GPS vs map debate which doesn't descend into abuse. I go along with Johnbythel for the most part. My map stays firmly in my sack most of the time. I do use compass bearings which I take using the grid lines on my phone based map. I am also in my sixties and have been walking since...

Re: Icy Mountains

It is very tempting for summer walkers to see the lovely spring weather and think it is alright to venture back out on the high hills. I see social media posts asking whether crampons and ice axes are needed in certain areas. If the warning is to them that the answer is "Yes and learn how to us...

Re: Icy Mountains

I find it quite difficult to judge these warnings. I'm experienced in mountains, but don't go out all the time in winter and am therefore permanently a bit "ring rusty" in winter conditions. I did used to ice climb, but that was a long, long time ago - there have been many thaw-freeze cycl...
