Re: Walking Etiquette

It's a very good question from the OP and one I have thought about. On well made "official" paths it's obvious that you should follow them if they are going your direction. The problem of the path widening around boggy bits seems to be getting worse, maybe with increased footfall. I've act...

Re: Recommend me a long distance trail

Either of these would be good and will have opportunities to wild camp. You could also think about the Great Glen Way which runs from Fort William to Inverness.

Re: Railway Crossing at Dalwhinnie

Hi folks Following this discussion. And do not want to take away from the more relevant and important discussion with regards to rights but... I was actually planning on heading into Ben Alder this weekend. A lot of planning had gone into it and we will be with bikes, camping gear etc. After readin...

Re: Overnight parking near Bruar

The Bridge of Tilt car park disallows overnight parking by camper Vans and Caravans, but is alright for cars. It's maybe a bit out of the way for Bruar. The visitor centre looks OK also, but I would avoid both if you intend to sleep in your car.

Re: Railway Crossing at Dalwhinnie

Somebody set earlier that the BTP were not at all signed up to treating the crossing as a trespass. BTP won't just do the bidding of Network Rail. They will need to be convinced that regular and systematic law breaking is taking place before they would mount an operation. At the moment I don't see e...

Re: So how are the midges/clegs/ticks where you are?

We are out walking (3 of us) every week and "touch wood" have never seen a tick. Clegs and midges are always going to be a problem as we are in Scotland. A breeze is always welcome as that tends to keep the little eating machines tucked up in their beds. Out of interest how many folk wear...

Re: So how are the midges/clegs/ticks where you are?

Horrendous midges in Glen Tilt at the weekend. I've have never experienced as many as were around. They disappeared with a breeze, but there wasn't much breeze in the Glen - can you imagine a Scottish Glen without much breeze?

Re: Best mobile network

I use EE and am always pleasantly surprised by the amount of coverage I get. I've got 4G rather than 5G. I frequently hear the ping of the phone when coming into range I get my e-mails and texts arriving. It can seem quite remote and yet there is still coverage.

Re: Don't know where to start with waterproof for munro bagg

Also, if you're looking at buying a few items this year. Might be worth looking at mountaineering Scotland membership - £25 for first year and you get 15% discount in Cotswold and 10% in tiso and gooutdoors (as well as others). I needed new boots, new jacket and wife needed a new bag. I've saved mo...

Re: Railway Crossing at Dalwhinnie

Think there's a railway arch if accessed from behind the little petrol station (Dalwhinnie Services!). Unless the filling station wants to use their car park to charge for longer term parking (just now the charge is by the hour and would be prohibitively expensive for a day or more in the hills). I...

Re: Railway Crossing at Dalwhinnie

I hadn't heard of this but the railway do come out with stuff like this every now and again, with not much thought going into the process. It may well be that they want walkers to use the access at the other end of the dam but they need to communicate this. Also there is a footbridge at Dalwhinnie ...

Re: Railway Crossing at Dalwhinnie

Think there's a railway arch if accessed from behind the little petrol station (Dalwhinnie Services!). That is useful information, but it's at odds with the car park provision. So now you park up near the crossing and have to walk back to the petrol station. Not so bad on a bike, but instead of rea...

Railway Crossing at Dalwhinnie

I was in Dalwhinnie over the weekend and parked in the Walkers car park then used the crossing over the railway. There are signs in the car park that the crossing is to close this coming week - it seems like a permanent closure. There will be access for "authorised users", but the pedestri...

Re: Don't know where to start with waterproof for munro bagg

Waterproofs spend a lot of time rolled up inside the pack. Whatever the reputation Scotland might have, you need waterproofs surprisingly seldom. I have Berghaus Deluge overtrousers which serve well, but are a bit on the heavy side although robust and effective. I carry a Berghaus Paclite jacket whi...
