Re: Question about the Strathfarrar 4

Haven't done it myself but plan to at some point. There are plenty of results on Google for it, e.g.:

Some effort. Getting them out the cupboard is hard enough!

Re: Beinn Mhic Chasgaig: Best Current Approach

Ended up doing a route from Glen Etive in the end for a few reasons. River crossing was a non-issue but I can see how it'd be pretty grim after heavy rain. I've attached a picture of the bombsi... hydro that's now there. Absolutely horrendous. 20231111_120252.jpg I crossed a wee bit further up strea...

Re: Hiking Eateries

The Pier in Lairg. Usually busy af as it's about the only cafe/restaurant in a 1, 000-mile radius but it's brilliant if you're driving down from Ben Hope, Klibreck, Merkland Corbetts/Grahams etc and want a coffee and cake.

The Postcode lottery will never be forgotten

Indeed. An Aberdonian couldn't legally travel to Bennachie or Pressendye whereas an Invernessian could legally access everything from Ben Hope to Ben Starav and from Braeriach to Sgurr Alasdair. Nuts!

Halcyon times!

Re: Backpacks

Hijacking this thread a bit but how do Gregory stack up? I'll probably be retiring a Lowe Alpine bag in the coming months, probably in favour of an Osprey Talon or similar and it looks like Gregory do some good stuff. Worth looking at or stick with Osprey?

Re: The Worst Win

This has to win the walk report prize. I've had some run-ins with forestry and rivers in my time but, F*** ME, this was awful to read! Honestly! Hilarious and cringeworthy in equal measure! If it makes you feel any better I 100% would not have taken my keys out my bag before attempting to lob ...

I almost made this joke three times but thought it was a bit crude. You're a better man than I!

Re: Time for a new jacket, Simond waterproof?

Well I decided against the Simond jacket in the end. I ordered the Keen one but the first one was faulty (looks like it's been ragged around in the shop as opposed to a factory fault) and the second one still had a security tag on it. By this point I'd lost patience and decided to get a Mountain Eq...

Re: Left behind and thrown away rubbish.

I'm less bothered by folk chucking McDonald's bags from their cars than all the fishing paraphernalia that you'll find on the majority of Scottish beaches. Scottish biodiversity is appallingly poor as is, the last thing we need is marine mammals and sea birds choking or getting tangled in fishing ne...

Re: Time for a new jacket, Simond waterproof?

My experience is that Gortex is no better than any other membrane but always adds a huge premium for using the name so I try and avoid it. If it was so much better then they would be willing to publish the stats that prove it. I'm also looking at the Keela Cairn jacket. Make sure your next jacket u...

Re: Time for a new jacket, Simond waterproof?

£150 will get you a decent Goretex jacket from a lot of the big companies if you shop around. I hear good things about Simond but would be wary of buying waterproofs that use the brand's proprietary membrane.

Re: When hillwalking becomes an addiction

Sounds like you could be doing with diversifying a bit. If you don't have the weather for a good hill day, do a coast/forest walk/cycle/run or similar that either your friends and family can join you in or that is short enough you can do and still meet social commitments. There is no real downside t...

Re: Sgurr a Chaorachan the hard way?

Thanks for the advice. I'm off to Kinlochewe next May and am already noting bucket-list hill routes. As usual there are far more good routes than the number of days I will be spending up there so have to be selective. Doubt it'll be a problem in May but there are a lot of quite deep fissures in the...
