A Cairngorm blast.

Everything was starting to line up: a decent forecast, nothing in the diary, cheap rail tickets, a fresh supply of flapjack, Laphroaig on offer in Morrison’s, so a decision was made to head for Aviemore and attempt a four-night backpacking expedition over the big lads of the Cairngorms. The forecast...

Re: Drumguish to Blair Atholl: in a big country.

I agree entirely with your thoughts on Carn Cloich-mhuilinn, a fine hill in a very fine location, must say have only been once to there many years back on a trip across some of the Gorms. It has the height .942 but lacking, in the eyes of the SMC, a couple of contours between it and Bhrotain....

Re: Hanging on to Quinag: just a breeze?

I got about twenty pages into Persuasion before giving up.
Quinag is one of the iconic mountain days (and nights, in your case,). Great report.

Re: Drumguish to Blair Atholl: in a big country.

That's what I call some great days in the hills! Your photos are fantastic! They want me pack my boots and head out just now. Thanks for posting really enjoyed the read  It was good knowing that someone else I knew had enjoyed camping there, it was such an idyllic spot. So lucky to have that ...

Re: Drumguish to Blair Atholl: in a big country.

A fine epic trip my friend, you seem to have a bee in yer bunnet re Munro tops & not Munro’s, have you heard the story about the Peak of the Spaniards in Kintail, if not I’ll tell you the next time we meet. 😂😂 Do you know, that rings a bell ... it's worth having a hill to fight on, metaphorical...

Re: Drumguish to Blair Atholl: in a big country.

Like a lover's voice, fires the mountainside! 8) Absolute belter of a report from a swathe of the country that is just the epitome of wild and the perfect place to wander freely for several days with nothing but a tent, some basic supplies and your thoughts! I have enjoyed many times doing j...

Drumguish to Blair Atholl: in a big country.

A first post-lockdown visit to Caledonia saw me up from York to Glasgow, spending a couple of days teaching trainee surgeons there how to keep their patients alive after the fun part of hacking them about, so at the end of the course I took the opportunity to nip on a train to Kingussie, to attempt ...

Re: We Shall be Released (from Lockdown)

Enjoyed reading that nicely paced report with its underlying vibe of quiet optimism - well that was my interpretation anyway! Just about to go off on my first Caledonian hill trip, 7kgs lighter but that’s as a result of developing hypertension and a need to sort myself out! I can’t see myself ever b...

Re: The Mullardoch 12 in a day

Thanks, that's an excellent description of the walk with really good practical advice. I wouldn't be able to complete that in a day so it'll have to be a "fast and light" overnighter (without much "fast" I'm afraid!), hopefully next May/June.

Re: Off-piste on Maoile Lunndaidh

Think it’s the only Munro where the Munro summit isn’t the highest point on the hill (certainly according to hill bagging). Myself and David Main followed the right hand shoulder up but don’t remember any scrambling Not really scrambling, just a very steep climb and working the way through small ro...

Off-piste on Maoile Lunndaidh

Why do we write walk reports? Many reasons I suspect, recording a wonderful day on or around the hills, or passing on useful information to others etc. This report sits in both of those categories I suppose, some nice photos, and to record route information which may be useful to others, ie don't do...

Re: In full view of the Devil's Elbow

and then the familiar to many Glas Maol bowl usually corniced in the winter. I did the Glenshee eastern four in the May after the "Beast from the East" and remember walking across that bowl from the last Munro, heading towards the ski centre, and looking up to see a mahoosive overhanging ...
