Re: Male and on your phone biggest dangers in Scotland

I think the article is referring to fatalities, not callouts. It's a bit misleading because she sounds like she's specifically talking about fatalities but the actual quote is "Men over 60 are the demographic that get into difficulties". She goes on to say ...but from the many years I’ve ...

Re: Training ideas for Scotland bike-hike trip?

I would try to make any training as specific as possible to the intended activity, so walking or cycling uphill with a weighted pack would probably work. Having said that, I did the bike hike to Beinn a' Bhùird last summer carrying climbing gear - thought I'd be out of shape because I was cycling mo...

Re: Bothy in front of Buachaille Etive Mor

The CDMC are still going strong, some members gave me a load of gear to get started trad climbing a few years ago so their fearsome reputation is a wee bit exaggerated - although I'm sure they had their moments. A more thorough history of the club is apparently in the works. Is the car park at Jacks...

Re: Ground conditions thread(s)?

Might not be useful to everyone here, the UKC winter conditions page has info on recent climbs.

https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/conditions/uk_winter/

I think the various Facebook groups are handy for conditions, guides tend to be out regularly and post pics & reports of popular routes.

Re: Winter gloves: I’m narrowed down to two good options

Haven't tried the gloves you mentioned, but it's worth having a few spare pairs as they are easily lost - the Simond gloves from Decathlon are good value.

Re: When can you claim the Munro

Munro bagging is going for a walk up a hill... That is rather underplaying it IMO: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/munros/inaccessible-pinnacle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aonach_Eagach You can get to the AE Munros separately without scrambling, and many (most?) In Pinn ascents are a walk up a hi...

Re: Poor Planning on Aonach Eagach.

Sounds like you got yourself through a bit of an epic, well done! We've taken up Bouldering and Top roping working up to Lead Climbing to learn basic rope techniques for the hills. Good decision, wish I'd done that sooner. I always thought climbing and hillwalking were separate activities, but now I...

Re: Succoth Car Park

Just saw this posted on Facebook, not sure if it's genuine but it's supposedly the new charges at Arrochar.

Re: Succoth Car Park

It's £1 per hour from 9am-6pm, free outside those hours but I'm not sure about overnight stays. As above, there's Ardgartan and other options further on.

Re: Ben Nevis

(I also recommend Tower Ridge if you can rock-climb at VDiff standard - though best with a guide who knows the route and has a 16foot sling to protect the move down into Tower Gap.) Just to be a wee bit pedantic, TR is a Diff and feels low in the grade. Gary Latter rates it comparable to North Butt...

Re: Starting from a high Carpark - cheat or not?

Perhaps no so today with us all travelling in our wee infernal combustion machines heading away to the hills and possibly without much transfer of skills among ourselves? I don't know, there are loads of indoor walls now along with social media groups and clubs so it seems easier than ever to get i...

Re: For the record -

Reading the responses to the OP's accusation, I think it's safe to say that WH forum users are not the problem here and we are fully aware of the decomposition rates of various fruits and vegetables. It's possible, though, that the elephant in the room is the fuel we all burn on journeys to the hill...

Re: For the record -

Anyway, I'm chucking a peel in the garden tomorrow just to settle this once and for all Unless your garden is a rock garden at 900m I don't think that will prove anything. Good point, I should really leave a few dozen banana skins at various altitudes and on different terrain types. If anyone sees ...
