Re: Beginning hillwalker

Hi Vandongen and welcome to the site! The Ring of Steall is certainly fantastic but it is also a much more demanding walk than the others you mention - both in length / ascent and in terms of difficulty (and definitely requires winter skills if it was still covered in snow). The one other warning I'...

Re: Mixed Wainwright height's

We did the height for the Wainwrights in feet. I think he may have turned in his grave if we'd done them in metres.

I'll fix the label on the Wainwright map to say feet shortly - thanks for spotting this and letting us know :D

Re: Early morning walks the hard way!

The Food is pretty good in the Isles Inn as well. Further afield, there's Applecross of course - great atmosphere, great food, great beer. The Seaforth in Ullapool is pretty good. A personal fave for food and beers is the Anderson in Fortrose on the Black Isle - worth a detour, probably one of the b...

Re: Freedom to roam!

Do though check out the MCofS's guide to the Outdoor Access code . Between 1st July - 20th October you should make an effort to find out whether stalking is taking place using the hillphones scheme where it is active. You should also look at any local notices or info - alternative routes should be o...

Re: Freedom to roam!

I haven't in Scotland either, personally, though through Walkhighlands I've heard of quite a number of trouble spots. I did once get stopped at the foot of Wildboar Fell in the Pennines. The local farmer told me I couldn't go up to the fell; I argued the point in a friendly way and he eventually los...

Re: Kinder Scout - Boring plateau/fantastic edge walk

I second that! When I was a teenager Edale was the only place with hills I could easily get to (by train), so alot of my earliest walking adventures were on Kinder, Rushup Edge, Lose Hill or Win Hill. We used to camp by the farm out of the village on the road towards Jacob's Ladder. The Kinder Edges...

Re: Virtual Highlands

Mind you, the Snowdon summit area is almost photo real. I'm finding this a bit addictive  Better get back to work.

Virtual Highlands

It seems that Virtual Highlands works nicely for the English and Welsh hills.

My favourite so far is the summit view from Lingmell

Great Gable and Scafell look excellent. You can walk about with the 'W' key as well as look around with the cursors if you've never tried it. :D

Re: A newbie to this board

Hi Kev and welcome on board! :D I do have a blogspot but perhaps better to share my wanderings with like-minded folks? Blogs are great, but the advantages of posting here is that not only will your reports be seen by regular users of the Forum, they will also appear as a source of reference to those...

Re: Wild camping advice sought

I currently use a Hilleberg Nallo which is a great tent but they are definitely prohibitively priced. Before then I had a really old Vango Hydra which was cheap when I bought it and it was a great tent - but when it wore out the newer models had become a fair bit heavier.

Re: 'Big Boy shot and killed

Yes. It's pretty pathetic to shoot a tame animal like this at point blank range - especially with a weapon that is not powerful enough to kill it - only put it into severe pain. :(

Re: ben challum

Good report Alan and a great inversion 8) - judging by all the trip reports there's been plenty of those lately. But where has all that great weather gone now :?

I deleted the duplicate pictures for you - if you have more you should be able to post them in another reply.
