Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Ayrshire Whitework was a popular and very delicate white embroidery on a muslin base. The motifs were often flowers and the ladies who did the work were hence referred to as The Flowerers.

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Damn, I knew about The Trogs and "Wild Thing". I also knew about the scientific name for the wren but failed to join the dots, I agree that Arthur Mitchell deserves more reading about and will do so. Meantime ... JB could have the tag “first” attached to many of his actions including call...

Re: How has hillwalking changed?

Thanks for the info, prog! Do they still have the proper 51g Mars Bars, instead of the tiny newer 39.5g ones (meaning you'd have to open more wrappers with freezing fingers)? My local Morrisons only had the even tinier snack size ones. 51g! In the 1990's they were 65g and 62.5g and cost a fraction ...

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

You got there in the end. To flesh it out Dr (later Sir) Arthur Mitchell a physician and leading authority on mental health visited Tinkers' Cave in 1866 and found it occupied by families of tinkers in poor conditions, but not much worse than those of slum dwellings he visited in his work. It's wort...

Re: Stags

Rigidly distinguished breeds are again a Victorian invention. Unless the Victorian era began in the 13th century you appear to be at odds with the academic consensus on this one; it's that stage where pedigree breeds of horses start appearing in the literature. Just one example will suffice. Althou...

Re: How has hillwalking changed?

One thing he said which looks different from now was that as a consequence the ability to downclimb was more important. When on practice outcrops they didn't tend to top rope but and did a lot of downclimbing. The modern improvement which was double edged was vibram soled boots. He said that in mix...

Re: How has hillwalking changed?

Principally in the equipment and accessibility of the hills I'd say. I was brought up in North Lancashire and started walking and climbing in 1958/9 through a local youth club(I was 13 or 14). I already had some knowledge of the Lake District as we were fortunate enough to own a car and Sunday trips...

Re: Stags

No it doesn't it means the breed has bred, evolved and lived in the UK as opposed to having been imported from overseas. Racism is a term applied to humans, not animals. We don't need any more anthromorphism from someone determined to board the outrage bus. I'm not at all outraged, I love horse peo...

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Well that rules out Archibald Menzies, who I was also looking into. Not him. A little more help. AM would be known professionally as Dr S AM and is one of Scotland's most notable sons, contributing much to the understanding of his specialisation that was advanced for its time. It is sad that such p...

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Nothing to do with reservoirs or David Balfour. The main person to look for is AM, it may help if you know it's Dr AM and it was his speciality which led him to visit TC.

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

RLS always means Robert Louis Stevenson to me but I think I must be down a rabbit hole. I have looked at a lot of his works and also discovered that there is a Stevenson Way in Scotland that roughly follows the route of David Balfour in "Kidnapped". It's a bit more challenging that the RL...

In an alternative incarnation(that which I choose to call my brain operates I know not how)a Wild Thing could have been released by the occupants.

Re: Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

CharlesT wrote:Here we go.TC was visited and described by AM in the mid 19th c. RLS was somewhat uncharitable in his comments. The DRA put an end to such in 1915, though it persisted to 1917 at least.

And those who persisted probably didn't give a TC for the DRA anyway.
