The last Inverness

After much deliberation, I’ve decided to give up my Inverness bolthole. The final decision became somewhat easier when I was offered the chance to spend an extended time in the US next spring. Gotta pay for that somehow! As much as I thought I’d already dialled back expectations for short winter day...

Re: Walking While "ill"

Thank you for sharing this with us. I hope the telling of the story, along with its associated memories, brings a bit of comfort.

You've been very much in my thoughts,

October adventures (Inverness)

Mon 18 Oct I dithered all morning about it, and finally, still swimming upstream against my better judgement, got into the car and drove north. Once again, the vagaries of the autumnal weather were firmly in charge. The forecasts were mixed, at best; at worst, I’d be sitting in my room for days. On...

Re: Missing walks or is it me?

You can see lists and maps of Hewitts, and tick them off, by selecting the "Hewitts (England & Wales)" option from the "Bagging" menu.

Re: Buidhe Bheinn, from Glenshiel rather than Kinloch Hourn

This looks a great route, thanks for posting. I admit, I was not looking forward to that drive to Kinloch Hourn

Re: Women’s Scarpa Terra GTX boots alternative

Now that's a helpful guideline, and "approximate number of outings" will be how I phrase the question next time!

Re: Women’s Scarpa Terra GTX boots alternative

I've also found that the Scarpa Terras don't wear as well as I'd like them to -- and as you say, it's a real disappointment, because they ARE so darn comfy. Perhaps against my better judgement, I recently bought another pair, and am planning to use them only for summer and / or on dry-ish walks as m...

Re: Quinag (#222) - a Corbetts' compleation camp

Congratulations, RH, a terrific write-up, and a fabulous compleation hill / outing. I've followed your reports and some of your routes (thank you!) over the years.

Long may you continue to wander!

More Autumnal (2021) Inverness

This trip started out ok, with a new Corbett bagged. But thereafter, I struggled with motivation. It was hard to come up with plans, and even harder to execute them. The weather has been unpredictable (welcome to Autumn in Scotland), the creepy crawlies are still out in abundance, and the news from ...

My inner Nan Shepherd

Wed 01 Sep – Sun 12 Sep, 2021 OK, I admit that my main goal during this trip was to avoid the creepy crawlies, namely, the vile keds. There’d been a thread about them on WH, and….ugh. The memory of being besieged by them on Meall Doire Faid last year around this time…ugh. I pored over that thread, ...

Five dreary Daer Donalds in a day with David

The trade-off you make for an easier drive, usually, is that the hills just aren’t all that exciting. That’s not to say that you won’t enjoy the outing, but at the end of the day, a Donald-plod can’t really hold a candle to, say, for example, a trip to Torridon. I’d already had two drives up (and do...

Southron stuff

Tues 24 Aug -- Wed 25 Aug A good forecast and rest days finally aligned, and Jimmy and I made plans to meet at my house for a couple of days of Corbett bagging. He’d announced, on the day he compleated the Munros—after insisting for months that whilst he’d still come to Scotland to accompany me, he...

A diet of Graham crackers

Tues 10 Aug -- Sun 22 Aug Tues Aug 10 Drive to Inverness. Uneventful, but long, due mostly to heavy traffic through Glasgow / Cumbernauld. Plus roadworks. Plus the usual idiots who think that they’re HGVs, and that their speed limit is 50mph (but who take it up to 80+mph and don’t let you overtake ...

Sun, fun, and adventure; agony and ecstasy

Fri 16 July -- Sun 25 July 2021 After spending three weeks at home, taking care of various tasks (including buying a new vehicle, which was rather a stress-filled venture), I returned to Inverness, enjoying the change of scene, but initially having a hard time summoning enthusiasm for hill adventur...
