Marsco

Marsco route description. Parked at Sligachan bridge on Feb 12 2008. Set off at 7:30 am down Glen Sligachan, the ground frost made walking easy as any normally boggy bits were frozen. The 1st photo shows the distinct profile of Marsco not long after leaving the car. Following the description on wal...

Re: Weather advice for highlands walking?

Hi sarahandandy This is a difficult question to answer. Even if i knew how high you were going, or what experience you had, as the amount of snow cover varies from year to year. I would expect snow on the higher peaks at this time, but in Scotland you never can tell. In the days leading up to your t...

Re: Rannoch station to Fort Bill

There is a bridge over the Abhainn Rath at Creaguaineach, but none between there and Tom an Eite. Sorry my last post made this confusing.

Re: Rannoch station to Fort Bill

Hi Alex I’ve done bits of this route while hill walking. Should be no problem from start at loch Eigheach to Corrour station, a good track continues to Creaguaineach lodge. The next bit to Tom an Eite I’ve not done, don’t think there is a bridge over the Abhainn Rath, so make sure your on the correc...

Re: NEW FEATURE - Gaelic pronunciation

This is a good idea, i‘ve found it impossible to learn gaelic mountain names from books. Just spent 20 minutes listening to the pronunciation of Scottish mountain and place names, mostly in the assynt area. Bit shocked to realise, after 25 years hill walking in Scotland how little i know, only got t...

Re: 50 & fitness level for Skye

Hi 0113 I think you need to increase the height you gain in a walk to at least 3000’. While carrying a 30 lb rucksack to get fit is ok, i would find this heavy to be carrying in the hills in may, of course you cannot compromise safety and hill walkers will have their own views on this. Tryfan would ...

Pinemarten

Whilst browsing google earth i came across this picture of a Pinemarten. It was taken by Christine Smyth of Inverinate, who kindly allowed me to upload it. I have seen a lot of wildlife in the twenty five years i have been hill walking in Scotland, but never a Pinemarten. I believe they are one of t...

Beautiful shot, i’ve magnified it to 400% without much loss of detail, at 600% it fills my screen.

Re: Bidean nam Bian, Glencoe

I have just read your post on Bidean, it brings back distant memories, must get out there again. You could have been on Bidean the same day I was on Ceathreamhnan, 19 Dec. The weather was pin sharp to the horizon in all directions. I could make out the Ben easily, and am sure I saw Bidean, but there...

Bad hill days

Bad hill days We all hope for a good day on the hill but things do not always go according to plan, flat tyres or breakdown on the way there, found you've left your boots at home after a 90 mile drive or getting lost, etc. Everyone who goes out regularly will have a story to tell, here's (one) of mi...

Bla Bheinn (Blaven)

The 1st time i did Bla Bheinn i followed the route as described, looking back the advantage of this route is you cannot see the main Cuillin until you top out, when you do, its a revelation. After reading a route described in trail magazine i parked near Kilmarie, a 3.5km walk put me at the foot of ...

Re: What is the best hill in Scotland?

This depends on your criteria, sharp ridges, viewpoints, terrain underfoot, being scared witless. In my case my favourite mountain(s) are the ones that give me the most trouble in getting to the summit, and so Sgurr nan Ceathreamhnan would be my choice, with Ben Alder a close second. 2 weeks ago i S...

Sgurr nan Ceathreamhnan

Did Sgurr nan Ceathreamhnan from Camban bothy on 19 Dec 2007. Left bothy at 8:00 am, cold and clear, contoured round to allt gleann gniomhaidh. Lung busting hike up to point 910, left some gear here then 35 minutes to summit. Amazing views in all directions, pin sharp to horizon, sat here for 1 hour...
