Re: Snow cover Ben Lawers area?

Probably too late I guess but Lawers was white from probably around 950m when I drove past it on Saturday. I get the feeling that almost all the snow you can see at the minute is brand new from passing showers, and only lasts until the next two hours of sunshine. Glencoe seemed to go from clear to w...

Re: Ghostbusters

Bidean nam Bian on Friday; only person on the route (the 'old' way, by the waterfalls above Loch Achtriochtan). Was just about to pull out of the corrie onto the ridge when I looked behind to see a runner coming up behind me, dressed all in black and making great progress up the steep and rubbly pat...

Re: Writing

Hamish's Mountain Walk and The Living Mountain are both essentials IMO, really excellent - if you know the areas being discussed, anyway. I can't imagine they're as effective if you've never walked in Scotland but Shepherd's work on the Cairngorms in particularly is sometimes breathtakingly well-obs...

Simonside: all the traverse, none of the trees (or tarmac)

Picture heavy wander over Simonside today, one of the North East's classic days out and deservedly popular (so many roads and houses around here named after it). The Lake District has a few smaller hills which are considered "suitable for all" but I don't think it has anything quite like S...

A Long Old Wander Through Northumberland

Got my girl to drop me off five miles up the road this morning and have just returned from a roundly satisfying 15 mile meander back, taking in the northern hills of Thrunton Woods, Cartington Hill, the Debdon estate, a possibly slightly trespassy look up through Cragside estate to the lakes, then o...

Re: Bespoke Transport

A slight contradiction as you want to wander aimlessly and yet you want bespoke transport. You don't need transport for these glens they are all easy accessible although it will take slightly longer. I know they're accessible; what I mean is that if I could pay somebody to take me to Alltbeithe or ...

Re: Bespoke Transport

I definitely wouldn't rule it out but I like the freedom of being able to spend as long as I want aimlessly wandering, and I feel like pre-arranged transport adds an unnecessary tension to the day. I personally prefer the idea of bespoke transport that takes me through long and private/inaccessible ...

Re: Is there a clever way of doing these 5 munros?

I spent so much time with Memory Map trying to work out a feasible route to do this lot as a one'er :) I'm just going to do Glas Tuiaichean, Carn an Righ and Beinn Iutharn Mhor from Spittal of Glenshee, up via Glenlochsie and back via Taitneach; and Carn Bhac on its own from the North. The hills aro...

Re: A Dog Walk With A View: Windy Gyle

Lola is 3 now and has 20 or so Munros to her name :) the other two have reached the time of life when the really big walks leave them sore for days (like me) so they don't get out so much any more, although they got around Cairn Gorm and the corries ok last month :)

Re: A Dog Walk With A View: Windy Gyle

It's still my favourite easy-ish walk in Northumberland (and Scotland). I'm lucky to live so nearby (probably been up and down another five or six times since I posted this) :) Pleased you enjoyed it. Did you see any other people..? Despite it being part of the Pennine Way and despite the majestic v...

Re: Where's the pic England v5

Alas, I've become a Scotland snob and don't get out in my own country so much these days (other than the Cheviots and they're all already posted and guessed). Will pass the opportunity to whoever has a picture to post :)

Well I'm guessing Thor's Cave, but I have no idea of the name of the hill it's in :)
