Re: Laser Competition. "End Pole conversion!

Some places make custom ultralight tent poles, e.g.

Re: Ben More (and Stob Binnein) A85 still free parking?

I looked at the walkers carpark on Google Maps, there's four or so of them sitting on chairs in the car-park spiking the camera. I wonder if any of them are "ours". :D 4 Walkers.jpg I'd planned on the northern circular as it was the WH main route and I'm trusting/gullible like that, and al...

Plan rewrite: heading tomorrow. I was going by the WH suggested route but I'm all ears for alternatives.

Ben More (and Stob Binnein) A85 still free parking?

Hey

Thinking of snag blag and bag these two tomorrow / later today.

Does anyone know if the parking on the A85 near Benmore Farm is still free?

Re: Lightweight 2-Man Tent Advice

You can buy lightweight tent poles if you don't use walking poles, they start at 40 grams each.

Re: Parking charges at Succoth, Arrochar.

Car is not a luxury-only item. It might be beyond Jobseekers Allowance, but otherwise the poor-end of working can and do afford a car. Rurally it's all but essential. The point of a regressive tax on sugar is to motivate companies to stop using it as an ingredient, or to cut portion sizes also reduc...

Re: Parking charges at Succoth, Arrochar.

Does the revenue at least go towards upkeep of the local area, e.g. path maintenance, or is this just an attempt to fleece tourists? It may not be hypothecated. Many councils are struggling to balance budgets thanks to years of austerity, and if they don't find new revenue streams, it becomes a que...

Re: Lightweight 2-Man Tent Advice

I use the 2-man for myself and my medium (11kg) dog, lots of room. There's room for 2 people, it's the kit that's the issue. The full packed weight of the silver-skirt 3-man is 2250g, but the minimal weight is 1850g; that will be without stuff-sacks or floorprint. My official 2-man floorprint is 250...

Re: wild camping in Norway

A water-filter (e.g. Sawyer mini) will get rid of 99.9999% of protozoa including Giardia.

I know I'm a big scardey-wuss at the best of times but I wouldn't drink water without one.

Re: Lightweight 2-Man Tent Advice

I use the Naturehike Cloud-Up 2, Amazon currently have the lighter weight ones (the "20D" range, 1.5kg for 2 man) for £135, or a fiver more with a snow skirt. (They have slightly heavier "210T" ones at just under 2kg for £105). I'm a bit jealous of the new models, they have venti...

Re: wild camping in Norway

Thought it's technically over the border, before wild-camping in Norway I recommend David Bruckner's 2017 documentary The Ritual. It'll give you a very good idea of what to expect.

Re: Vancouver, BC, Canada

Visited the bro-in-law earlier this year. Pottered around Vancouver for a few days then headed out to Penticton. Very much enjoyed VC having smoke shops, cough cough . Mild stuff, but nice, and cheap. Anyway he used Trailforks app. It's for and by mountain-bikers, but they seem to be the guys & ...

Re: Walking tracker that works without GPS

As said, GPS is the way it works. Apple should and Android definitely does work for GPS in Flight Mode (important as that's a big battery saver). I know nothing about Apple apps, but GPS Tracker by FollowMee is free and should at least tell if you if your phone is working as a GPS receiver/tracker, ...

Re: Camping cookware recommendations?

I have the Lixada Wind Shield for my spirit burner. Highly recommend it. I trimmed mine a bit and folded the edge to blunt it; now it fits inside the Evernew pot. Doesn't hinder functionality. I also use a couple of large paperclips to hold it together; very light, work perfectly, and I don't need t...
