Exploring Portnavan and Port Weymms

Our cottage on Islay was just a short distance away from Portnaven and on the Friday we took the short drive down to the village to explore. The parking area was easy to find (as a bonus it is also where the recycling bins are so we also found where we needed to take the recycling to at the end of o...

Re: Outdoor Access Trust

Wow, considering all the effort trying to encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors more then this twit comes out with a load of elitist garbage making it look as if only those with money go hillwalking! I saw the appeal while on holiday, I would have donated, but with that attitude I'll donate el...

Whisky and Walks: Islay Holiday (Part 2 Kilchoman & Bowmore)

Next up in the distillery tours was Kilchoman, an independant distillery run on a family-owned farm. While my OH went inside to sample some whisky, we started our walk from the distillery heading back out to the road on the long driveway turning left to head towards Machir Bay. In the fields along t...

Whisky and Walks: Islay Holiday (Part 1 Bunnahabhain & Caol)

I'm not long back from a fantastic two weeks holiday on Islay :D Glorious weather for most of the time and my OH was very happy as he does enjoy his whisky especially the Islay malts and took full advantage of the holiday  Of course while he was enjoying a fancy tour in the distillery, I was le...

Re: Deteroration of Quality of Gear

My Altberg Tetheras are around 8 and a half years old now, got them resoled at Altberg a few years back for a very reasonable £60. A previous pair of Scarpa Terra GTX, which were of slipper like comfort lasted 18 months before the vibram sole started disintegrating. Definitely not sure the words &q...

Re: Hoy help

I was on Orkney last year, did plan to do some hills on Hoy but the weather, particularly the wind, wasn't favourable  I had found some good reports on doing these hills though not sure if it was on here or elsewhere, but it basically seems to be steep whatever way you do it!

Re: Camping with the dog

I've always done simple trips with mine to start with to see how they react to the tent. Some have found it scary initially and found it hard to settle, not something I'd want happening after a long day when I want to sleep! Others have taken to it much quicker, my boy seemed to have the attitude of...

Re: Deteroration of Quality of Gear

I don't know if there is any stats available, but I'd hazard a guess that most slips and trips are either from inexperienced hikers and or from wearing inadequate footwear, rather than the correct footwear that has worn out soles. Have to say I had a slip, not a bad one just hurt my thumb, that was...

Re: Backup options?

I usually have a backup walk in mind, there can be various reasons why one walk isn't possible even when doing a lower level walk so having an alternative already in mind is handy. Classic example is a walk I did in Glen Tanar, had planned to do one route (not the waymarked walks) but a certain bird...

Waterproof socks - are any worth it?

I hate getting wet feet, but it happens a lot especially when I'm out canicrossing  Are any of the supposedly waterproof socks worth it and will they stand up to regular use?

Re: OS maps not working in user reports

Something seems to have gone pearshaped in the E&W maps from users' reports now, as no mapping at all is shown either on the embedded image in the report thread, or in the full-screen separate page.... only a tantalising Ordnance Survey logo!! This is definitely a recent thing, I think? Help! (...

Re: Question about the Island of Hoy in the Orkneys

There are two ferries to Hoy both of which run all year round as there are people living on the islands that need to get back and forth :) The ferry from Stromness is a passenger-only ferry, to take the car across as well you would need to use the Houten ferry. It isn't expensive to take the car ove...
