Still mild....

A fine day today (2 March) - still no snow on the Trotternish Hills, and barely any even on the highest summits when we were in Kintail last weekend. This forum now covers the whole of the Highlands, so it'd be nice to hear about conditions in other areas of Scotland..... Anyone know if there's much...

Otters near Corran

Walked along the old coast path from Corran in the Glenelg peninsula on Friday (see Glenelg coastal walk - a superb walk if you don't know it).

There was a large dog otter swimming along the Loch Huorn coastline - we kept catching him up every few minutes before he eventually gave us the slip.

Roe Deer

I disturbed a couple of roe deer whilst walking to Plockton's Coral Beach today. There were quite close but zipped away pretty quickly.

Not really on Skye, but it's actually the first time I've seen these in the Highlands. Are they common? :?:

No snow on Trotternish Ridge

Glorious sunshine today, the first for over a week.

The continuing mild weather means there is no snow at all now in Trotternish. The Cuillin have very little either from what I have seen - does anyone living nearer have a better view?

Merlin at Stenscholl

Saw a Merlin today hovering by the road verge in Stenscholl, Staffin.

Reminds me of how we hardly ever see Kestrels in these parts - I don't think I've ever seen one on Skye. It makes a change from the buzzard which we see nearly every time we wonder down the road in front of Garafad.

Castles and gardens....

I'd recommend Armadale Castle and gardens - the castle is a ruin but the gardens and museum are excellent. Dunvegan Castle is very popular and has good gardens though some think it a little overpriced. The Museum of Island Life near Kilmuir is also worth a visit. Generally the scenery is Skye's grea...

We are hoping to obtain a licence from the Ordnance Survey shortly.

Staffin Bay

Today was the first chance to get out after the gales of Thursday and Friday and torrential rain yesterday. Counted 19 greylag geese, which have been around Staffin for the last week or so. Also a heron down by the outflow of the Kilmartin River - hadn't seen one on the bay since last winter. Loads ...
