September sunshine

18 – 22 Sep 2020 Fri 18 Sep A hill along the way Corbett: Beinn Mholach, from Dalnaspidal 6¾ hr / 23.2 km / 635m It was nearly 10am by the time I set off. I wasn’t sure whether I’d actually make the summit; I struggle with late starts. At the very least, I’d have a nice walk along the loch, and per...

Jimmy's penultimate

The Met Office had assured us that we were in for a good day. HA. As we drove along a rainy Loch Lomond, I assured Jimmy that we were still a good distance away, and that there was plenty of time for it to clear. I became less certain the more north we drove, and although the rain had stopped by the...

Re: deer flies - keds

They were horrid today when I climbed Meall Doire Faid. I started out the day feeling quite chuffed--although it was warm until I got onto the ridge, it was midge-less, and I thought I was in for a beastie-less belter of a day. I sat on the top of Meallan Mhurchaidh to soak in fabulous views and sun...

Re: The Mell Circuit

It was passable back in mid-July. There were a couple of rough and muddy stretches, at the bottom of the slide areas, but we did the entire circuit without problems. Don't know if rain since then might have changed the situation.

Operation "Salvage the Summer"

23 Aug – 04 Sep 2020 I’ve found the past few weeks—post-full-lockdown—to be much more difficult than full lockdown was. I haven’t had the heart to go anywhere, even though it’s now allowed. I’ve just heard too many stories of overcrowding and bad behaviour, and have seen it for myself. David and I ...

What's even worse is when they don't get showered away successfully and you still find them crawling on you the next day. Ugh. Vile creatures.

Re: The Fisherfield 6 - Arduous but a 'Must Do'

"... although I kept telling myself it was really Arthur's Seat with a few bits added on" I laughed out loud at this -- I may borrow it to add variety to "nearly there" and "just around the corner" as motivational phrases!  Good effort, and some really nice p...

Glen Finglas, Sim-ple

Oh, dear, I’m struggling to write this one. Not because of anything in particular—we had a very good day, talking pretty much nonstop, since we’d not had a walk together in eons. Selecting a route in these post-lockdown days is a challenge. The nearby hills are likely to be busy, especially the more...

Two birds, one stone

Freedom, in the lifting of the “5-mile limit for leisure or recreation” guideline, had come a few days before, but typically, the weather since then had been rather grotty. But Monday’s forecast was fine and dry, and I deemed it suitable for a first proper outing. Where to go, what to do? I wanted t...

Not the GR10

Freedom had ended on a very good outing: way back in the middle of March, I’d spent a few hours surrounded by the snow-covered hills near Tyndrum, little knowing that the memories of that day would need to sustain me for more than three months. Covid-19 had arrived in the UK with a vengeance by then...

Lockdown notes

13 Mar – 15 July 2020 What a strange, worrying, and sometimes lonely interval (“pause”) this has been. Most of the time, it was, and I was, fine. I’ll try to always remember how grateful I was for all that I had and have that so many didn’t and don’t. There were a few low points, certainly, not wor...

Re: Best Day Challenge -- story + one photo

Although I could easily continue to ponder on this for a few more weeks of lockdown, I feel obligated to make my contribution, given that I was the one that threw down the gauntlet. There’s one that keeps rising to the top, even though posting an entry about Ben Nevis—at least partially—seems unimag...

Re: Best Day Challenge -- story + one photo

Is there a closing date? :) Nope. No prizes, either. Just a bit of fun. Tower Ridge... Thanks, Skyelines, for getting us started. Great story! I did anticipate that responses might fall roughly into two categories -- from people who know exactly what their standout day was, and for which it'...
