Re: Carleatheran from Gargunnock

I remember walking off by the Kippen track and as I got near the transmitter there was thunder. I was lucky. No lightning. I quickened up but only a mile away in Kippen there had been lightning thunder and a torrential downpour.

Re: Carleatheran from Gargunnock

A jolly nice walk. Not startlingly high but I always find it a good vantage point. Quite wild and remote up there too as long as there is no shooting going on. Am always suprised few people post about having been up there

Bus along Glen Affric

Anybody got recent experience of using the Ross Minibus that goes to the car park in Glen Affric 3 days a week from the start of July. I am going that way to the youth hostel on Friday from Inverness. There are conflicting departure times from Inverness on the Ross Minibus website. One bus at 9.40 f...

Re: Weird bird song - What could it be

Wow David that is amazing. I never gave a thought that birds would have a distinctive warning call as well. After googling Wheatear - warning - sound I also found this site www.xeno-canto.org/species/Oenanthe-oenanthe which I suspect I will use again. On the 3rd page of recordings there are several ...

Re: Weird bird song - What could it be

This one had the decency to stop flying and sit on a rock for me Walk Aboot and for that I am pleased. Normally all I see of the one in the Botanic Gardens is a little blue blur. The number of times I have said to my friend "Ooh look a Kingfisher" and she can't see anything but a flurry of...

Weird bird song - What could it be

I just cannot pin down this bird. I have discounted the usual warblers and wheatears, chiff chaffs and whinchats. It had one of the strangest songs I have ever heard. A two note song that sounded like somebody hitting a piece of metal. It was on the road up to the Muirshiel Country Park, about a mil...

Re: Aonach Eagach at 73 years old

Hello Kate66. I go along with your general point about the "oldies" not being written off. However I think the paragraphs of your report that are the best are the last "Do it, but do it wisely and please make sure you are fully aware of what lies ahead and that you are experienced or ...

Re: Can you help identify these birds

Thanks everyone. At the RSPB Quiz night at Hillhead Sports Club in Glasgow I did solicit some further ....supposedly expert opinion. They all thought the first one was a Greenshank (too pale for a Bar Tailed Godwit they thought) and agreed with the Little Grebe and the Buzzard. On the other hand wha...

Can you help identify these birds

Just upgraded from the Lumix DMC-FZ 5 (yeah they did make them about 7 years ago) to the DMC-FZ 200. It will take ages to get used to it and so I apologise for the grainy photos. I would welcome any help in identifying or confirming identification of the birds in these photos. First 3 were actually ...

Re: Edinburgh to Falkirk by the Union Canal

I love my mountains, I really do but I am glad that we can fashion out trails like this so much. I recently took some friends up Cockleroy and Witches Craig at Linlithgow and apart from a teriffic day with them I thought Grangemouth all lit up looked quite wonderful as we came down Hillhouse woods i...
