Re: What was right thing to do on Beinn Fhionnlaidh?

I have this issue too. Left my wife and son behind to go on to the summit of 2 hills in Hong Kong recently. So long as you've agreed a plan and it's understood the other party can start heading back down if they get bored / cold, it's not a problem. If you have a phone signal, you can keep in touch ...

Re: Overnight on a hill

Ben Starav gives good summit views at dawn and there is room to pitch just below the summit.

Re: Almost trackless 7 day summer hike suggestions wanted

The Cairngorms would be your best bet. You can get a train to Aviemore. Lots of route suggestions on this site. Midges will be an issue in August, but if you normally walk in Scandinavia maybe you are used to that. You should be OK to avoid deer stalking in the main Cairngorms. Others can probably a...

Re: Long circular from Cairnwell: 14 Munros, 39 miles, 12 ho

Good going! That lot took me 6 separate walks (7 if you include an aborted attempt on Tolmount & Tom Buidhe from Glen Doll) over 27 years.

I suspect the plateau isn't done in one go as often as it might be because it's split over separate OS maps.

Re: The Brocken Spectre Show on Bidean nam Bian

Brilliant! I like the idea of having a list of mountains that owe you a view when you've completed. Bidean is now top of my (long) list! I did it in a whiteout in winter, which was great navigational practice but no views. It's difficult to be 100% sure that bumps you visited by compass bearings and...

Re: sgor gaibhre/carn dearg from loch eigheach

We did it during the day when the railway was closed due to storms. We missed out the Corbett and just did an out and back via the Road to the Isles. Report here: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=16778

Re: The Fiddler's Aurora

Great shots of a spectacular aurora and sunrise over stunning mountains. Worth losing a night's sleep for IMHO.

Love the selfies and the way you started off from Fort William at 1 am after a pint!

Re: So what's in your thermos?

My favourite was a triple shot gingerbread latte from the cafe in Braemar, which went down very nicely at Derry Lodge and on the summit of Beinn Bhreac in a passing hailstorm (in summer). If it's soup, I usually go for Heinz cream of tomato. Cup a soups I use more with a stove, usually cooked up out...

Re: Creag Meagaidh: 11 years later

Happy Anniversary!

Doubt I'd manage to persuade my other half to climb 3 Munros to celebrate our anniversary - though I did once get her to go to North Uist :)

Re: Camping near Luibeg Bridge

We found a nice spot beneath some pines to the left of the path maybe about a third of the way from Derry Lodge to Luibeg but didn't have the bikes with us on that occasion. I think you'd have to push them much of the way or leave them and carry on on foot..

Re: Congregating around bothies to camp outside

I'd agree with all the above reasons. We biked in to Loch Callater this year to set up a camp for a walk over Tolmount and Tom Buidhe. The bothy was as far as the track was bikeable and there was a nice grassy pitch site just beyond it - plus there was a water source and a composting toilet. It was ...

Re: Chanonry Point - now charged

Does anyone know if being a member of National Trust Scotland entitles you to park free in the NT England car parks, as it is cheaper (£45 for annual membership for a senior). We were shocked when it cost us £7-50 to park for a day in the car park en route for Watendlath (something or other bridge)...

Re: OS Map Numbering ….I’m confused!

I think they've published some new Outdoor Leisure maps for the Cairngorms, replacing previous Explorer Maps. OL Maps cover the National Parks and more touristy areas, but are pretty much the same as the Explorers nowadays. Possibly they have more symbols for touristy things and some of them are dou...

Re: frugal way to get 1:25k topo maps on a GPS device?

Since you need to take a paper map and compass anyway, the free OS download must be the most frugal option - assuming you already have a smartphone. Download the area you need to the phone whilst you have wifi and only use the phone occasionally to check position, or carry a charged power bank or us...
