Corrour to Fort William - any fire wood

Corrour to Fort William - any fire wood

Postby Allanhonda » Wed Feb 21, 2018 11:16 pm

Hi, planning the above walk end March. Train to Corrour so 1st day start will be midday with likely camp around Meannanach bothy. I’ve seen the other posts on here re route/etc but question - is there any trees in this area for small fire with whatever dead wood around, as it will likely still be chilly. Thanks for any help Allan

If there is you may have to dig through three feet of snow to find it....

Met an Estonian lad at corrour station 2 nights ago.
He had stayed there the night before. He carried in a few blocks of solid fuel- no firewood around- says he.
Oh and that path on the map ain't really a path now with all the snow.
He was tempted to walk down the line some of the way - but didn't in the end - says he.
It started getting cold about 6ish - wrap up well!!

Thanks for replies, I might push this one out to April then, but just so keen to get back as did wee cycle last year to Loch Ossian for camp and place feels so remote.

If it is still very snowy you can haul a sledge with a sack of logs/coal on it.

We stayed at Staoinaig a couple of years ago and managed to source some dead wood to burn. You might find some on the north side of the river around the wooded area just east of Staoinaig and carry it along, I don't think you'll find any beyond there.

How many of you are going for carrying fuel between you? The snow will make it more of an adventure.

End of March when you are planning going there is a good chance there will be no snow between Corrour and Fort William. The path from Corrour through to Glen Nevis only gets up to an elevation of 350 - 400m. Check the conditions nearer the time.
All the best. :D

Aye, impossible to say where there will be snow at the end of March - could be a heatwave!

There should be some fuel along the riverbank up to Staoineag but nothing beyond there. If planning on reaching the Fort next day, ie just one night's camp, then the obvious thing to do would be forego the tent, stay at Meanach bothy and carry a bag of coal or a few firelogs in.
