Canisp from Glencanisp

Canisp from Glencanisp

Postby Avocetboy » Mon Aug 15, 2022 1:11 pm

Biked in to Suilven last week from Glencanisp. Whilst ascending Suilven, I noticed the continuation of the Glencanisp path that diverts off and upwards towards the West ridge of Canisp. Looking at the OS Map, the path ends about 1K from the ridge, but the gradient of the ridge leading up to Canisp looks relatively straight forward. Has anyone done this route? Is it feasible?

One resource I find helpful is open cycle maps, it usually has paths that aren't on the OS maps.

The path you refer to actually goes a bit further, up to the un-named lochain before the ridge proper

I do vaguely remember a 'path' of sorts heading down that way from the summit.

Seem to remember a decent FWD track for a km or two after the Suilven turn-off before a more rough/boggy track up to the ridge as it turns more NE. No recollection if the ridge had a path but it is mostly straightforward and then a bit bouldery at the top.

In another location Canisp would be a decent enough hill but worth saving for a good day as the views are spectacular.

Yeah, we combined Canisp with Suilven a few years ago to pad out the trip. It's a nice jaunt up, pathless once you leave the track but nothing difficult. 8)

Many thanks for all responses, looks a more interesting way up Canisp, especially if take bikes in as far as possible
