Mount Keen on a bike

Mount Keen on a bike

Postby Wellman77 » Mon Oct 05, 2020 3:09 pm

Thinking of cycling in to Mount Keen via Glen Esk and was wondering where the best place near Invermark Cottage to leave a bike would be?

Thanks

Anywhere near the cottage, unless you're a super strong cyclist you'll not get it much further anyway without a lot of pushing. Take a cheap lock and chuck round the wheel/ frame and you'll be fine. Nothing fancy needed, you just want to prevent someone from taking a free ride back to the carpark.

I fear you may only have a day or two left though...

I wouldn't bother with a lock, cheap or otherwise. Almost anywhere in the hills you can find a patch of deep vegetation close to the point where you start to walk, and where a bike lying on its side won't be spotted unless you're almost on top of it. It does depend on remembering exactly where you've left it, though!

I’ve planned to do Mount Keen some time next month. The route on this website says it’s an 11 mile walk so barely worth the hassle of a bike I would suggest.

Yes the walk through the Glen is very uneventful, albeit not very long.

Think we’re fine on the final point Fiona, thankfully

I just left mine in the hedge behind the cottage. Couldn't see it at all

Brings back memories that! Wild camping many years ago got disturbed by a biker comin back on 4 early mornings looking for his bike! Spent hours searching. Plus we tried for a few hours with no success.

Easier nowadays with a gps. I wonder if the bikes still there.

I always take a small coil lock. The weight is negligible and its a reasonable enough quality lock to prevent all but the dedicated.

I do know of an incident where an unlocked bike was stolen on a popular hill walk.

Thanks for all the replies, went on Saturday and chained the bikes to a tree next to the cottage. It was well worth it and took around 1.5 hours off the guide time.
