Snow on the hills?

Snow on the hills?

Postby sc00ba87 » Thu Oct 08, 2020 6:54 pm

Good evening guys, I hope you're all well.

I was just looking to see if anyone was in the vicinity of Ben Nevis and could tell me if the snow has arrived yet? I know it has been sporadically forecast this week but is there any sitting snow?

Hoping to maybe sneak a climb in if there remains to be no Covid travel restrictions in place over the weekend.

Any and all help appreciated.

Thank you & take care.

you will be fine, there has been a flutter of snow on a few hills the past couple of weeks, but nothing that will trouble you.
was up Glen sheil last thursday and there was a couple of inches on the tops, it was gone by the next day

There’s definitely the odd bit of snow settling for a day or so but nothing you could do any winter climbing in.

Worth keeping an eye on the mountain webcams. Meall a' Bhuiridh is showing some this morning. Again, I don't think I'll be packing the axe and crampons for a while yet.

The autumn colours on the trees look like they are going to be particularly good this year. That and the amount of hedgerow berries makes me think it might be the hardest winter we have had for a while. I live in the West Country and for the last few years I have been coming up to the Highlands for a week in March. Thick powdery soft snow late in the season is mightily difficult to walk in. Much more difficult than old well-consolidated snow which has been lying on frozen ground for a few months.
The picture is my brother on Beinn Dearg, Glen Lyon.
We never got to the top. After we both plunged waist deep into soft snow several times within a hundred yards we gave up for the day!

Sadly for us the predictive ability of plants is somewhat limited.

However it is nice to be reminded of the good weather in the spring when the flowers were emerging and the sun and rain when the fruit was forming and ripening.
Leaf colour and the duration of the change is a result of the chemicals formed during the summer and the conditions prevailing during the change.
So enjoy while it lasts and wait and see what the winter brings. :D

Cheers Scooba. Good to see some snow. Looked like a crackin day for the Ben today. It was sticking out above the clouds along with a few others. :D

I've been there too. My very first climb, also in March, started off as a lovely day. We ended up in this on Ben Lomond, and didn't make the summit either. Didnt deter me though, made me more determined

No worries, ST, sounds like the day I was looking for. Been up the Ben a couple times now & never seen a view from beyond the halfway Lochan. I'll just need to try again next year
