Beinn a' Chuallaich B847 – No Parking

I popped up Beinn a' Chuallaich yesterday.

As suggested in the walkhighlands walk description I parked by the layby at NN707614 on the B847.
The walk description notes that there are very few places suitable for parking along the B847. As I was getting myself ready, I noticed the passing place sign and that it stated No Parking in Layby. There is also a farmers gate here. I was careful not to cause any obstruction and to try and allow room should anybody else arrive, I was in effect parked at the side of the layby.

I headed off on my walk. I noticed a police van passing as I headed up the lower slopes across the road – they seemed uninterested in my parking. To minimise my time on the hill, and hopefully avoid my car attracting any unwanted attention, I retuned the way I came rather than complete the more attractive circular route.

On driving back out I noticed that every passing place and lay-by on the B847 has a no parking sign. Basically, it appears that no parking is allowed on this road.

Very, a layby and a passing place are two different things. Besides. the grass verge isn't either of those.

Just checked and it's many years since parking there and IIRC that location was never an official lay by. But was used by what was a "bothy" or hut used by walkers.
Maybe the local council has now prohibited it.

Since you were parked completely off the tarmac, I think that's entirely legal. I found a circuit from Kinloch Rannoch more satisfying for this one - a little longer, but much less road walking the the WH route.

That is how I had parked before I noticed the sign. I always try to keep well away from gates and allow space for others. But yes, once I’d noticed the sign I figured I was fine as I was off the tarmac. I took a couple of snaps just in case.

The whole road is marked out with no parking signs. I thought that a bit odd. A bit of a worry if this becomes common.

I’m fortunate that my Skoda sits fairly high and has 4wd, so I can usually find somewhere to park, and get back out again. You would struggle to get a car off the tarmac there.

I know of at least one guide book that lists this as a start point, as well as this site.

Probably nowadays the amount of traffic this road takes is causing problems!
Even parking Ki Ran was rather limited years ago.

Yep.
Many years ago and still on the 2018 OS 25k map a hut used by walkers was within 200 metres of the pull in that walkers used not a lay bye as such.
Maybe it has gone but was in use in at least 2007.

It was also mentioned in the original Corbetts guide.

I assume your original photograph? Does not load on my phone.
The hut I am talking about was green and basically a large garden shed. At a distance of 0.12 miles away from the road.

I climbed Beinn a' Chuallaich about 10 years ago I reckon, and parked in the same place as you. I've been past a couple of times quite recently and don't remember any no parking signs. They have gone a bit mental with their parking restrictions in perthshire this year though.

My corbett book is dated 1993 - the one with the cobbler on front cover and mentions that hut as a bothy. I remember it vaguely and think it was maybe green in the inside.

Every passing place and layby from Struan to that particular layby has a no parking sign as per my photo.

I returned to the A9 the same way, so I can't comment on the rest of the road.
