I guess it was hunting for house sparrows.

They're moderately common in gardens, so I suppose it's not that surprising that one saw a tree to perch in and took its chance.

Nice to see, unless you are a bird. We have at least one regular visitor that has decimated the population of doves, blackbirds and pigeons. They're bigger than I imagined they would be and lighting quick and agile in confined spaces.
