Anyone know what happened to the 1:50,000 maps that used to be available on the walk routes?

If not logged in, you get the Walkhighlands version mapping (which is based off OS data). This is as it has always been.

If you are logged in, you get OS 1:50k and OS 1:25k - which was a new feature as of last month (before then there was no OS 1:50k, just our version).

Paul,

I am logged in as rmse047071 and can get the 1:50000 maps on GPS but not on the maps associated with the walk descriptions?

Some confusion here. To be clear, there are no OS 1:50k maps on the GPS planner, only the Walkhighlands-own 1:50k maps (and OS 1:25k maps).

On described route maps, you should get the genuine OS map at both 1:50k and 1:25k when logged in, so they are better than the GPS planner map at that scale.

What are you getting on your route maps?

The one thing that you don't get is 1:25k maps on user route maps associated with walk *reports*, unless you click on 'Open full screen'.

No idea if that's the problem, though!

ETA:
Unless the OP just really liked the old WH 1:50k maps, and wishes the new OS ones would go away. I don't feel that way, but I think it's consistent with the description of the issue.
