Youth On The Hills

Youth On The Hills

Many of you might have seen this before, but it's an excellent video of the Cairngorms, shot in the 1940s.

Goes to show, you don't need to spend thousands on kit. Your kilt and a pipe will do!

If you look at the specifications on the left it says "Sound:silent". Pity.

Thanks for digging this out. nikcster.

On the whole, I thought they looked better eqipped than i did in 1961

The kit looks very similar to the kit my friends and I used into the 70's.

Thanks for sharing your photos! I love seeing people's old pictures. Back when you had 36 shots for the whole day if you were lucky!

One bit of kit they probably did have was hobnail boots. So no stopping to attach crampons or spikes, but probably safer than modern boots without them in winter.

A recent podcast featuring Willie Gorman might also be of interest, inspired by the first ascent of Everest they ventured out with a washing line...

Agreed - there was a shop in Aberdeen , MacKays, where these could be bought until recently, unfortunately the shop is no more. I wonder if they are available anywhere? The boots need leather soles to take the clinkers and hobnails.
