Needing ideas

Needing ideas

Postby dannyJAE » Fri Apr 16, 2021 9:12 am

First post on the forum so here goes.

Started hitting all the local (Fife) hills during lockdown however would like to travel further and bag something larger tomorrow due to the restrictions being lifted. I expect all of the popular routes to be very busy and would prefer to avoid.
Any suggestions within an hour of Fife that is beginner friendly? I had considered about Ben Chonzie however expect it to be busy.

Beginner friendly hills tend to be the ones with good paths, and the ones with good paths tend to be the busy ones :) Is it parking issues you are trying to avoid, or busy paths?

What about Ben Vrackie? It'll be busy, but if the car park is full, there's plenty more space in Pitlochry.

Alternatively somewhere in the Ochils like Ben Cleuch or King's Seat Hill, starting from one of the Hillfoots villages.

West Lomond was far less busy today than it has been. You could stay in Fife and do all the 7 Hills to manufacture a Munro while waiting for the popular Munros to clear. 90 miles driving

Have you tried Walks > Search?

I tried it for grade 2 to grade 3 difficulty within 75km of Dunfermline length 5 to 15km and it returned 85 walks, with a locator map and list of walk names with grade, length travel distance.

Try Corbetts.
Munros attract people because they're on a list, whereas Corbetts seem not to be as popular, due to the summit being less than 3000ft above sea level.

Ochils as suggested above, great hills, and often fairly steep too - mainly at the start, so a good progression.

Ben Chonzie is a good starter, I've never really seen it that busy, and there's also some good walking the other side of turrett reservoir too, achnafree and choinneachain, good quad track paths and never busy. You can also take Chonzie from the side too, up the east side of the reservoir.
