Ben Wyvis conditions?

Ben Wyvis conditions?

Postby Arunsharma » Sat Apr 17, 2021 1:30 am

Are crampons/ice axe currently needed on Ben Wyvis? Has anyone been up in the last day or two?
A family member with no hill walking experience, mentioned that he was going up Ben Wyvis soon with colleagues from his new workplace. (I have no idea about their experience/skills). From Inverness it looks like still winter conditions up there. Some on the ground experience would help me advise him. Thanks.

Not a perfect indicator but have a look at https://www.sais.gov.uk/ where the Northern Cairngorms will give an idea

Looking at the range I'd probably want both axe & crampons (and a lot of slogging stamina)!

We been in the area but not up Ben Wyvis this week. There was snow on the North and North East faces and mostly unavoidable above 750 m and a lot less if any on south facing slopes.

Drive past it today, normal route looked devoid of snow at least to An Cabar.

No snow going up the steep part to an cabar, certainly wouldn't need crampons up there as of today (sat 17th april).. im from Inverness and it looks like winter conditions up there but its because all the snow is lying on the south face

Thank you very much for the replies, that puts my mind at rest. 👍
Personally I would carry my ice axe & crampons, but there seems to be many hill walkers who don't own them, and don't seem to appreciate the risks, or heed the advice about walking on the white stuff (my own family included 😣!)

Me too, but if the path is clear up to An Cabar, then you are unlikely to come to much harm on the plateau in spring snow conditions.
