Crianlarich Hills / Rannoch Wall snow cover

Crianlarich Hills / Rannoch Wall snow cover

Postby denfinella » Thu Apr 22, 2021 12:13 pm

I've got my eyes on some of the hills around Crianlarich / Tyndrum this weekend. We don't have any winter equipment, so can anyone confirm that the snow's mostly gone here? I can't see many problematic coires, and expect the snow should have melted from the ridges.

First option is the Beinn Achaladair group above Loch Tulla.

Second option is some of the hills around Crianlarich (from the Glen Falloch side - not the Inverlochlarig side). We probably won't be doing Ben More or Stob Binnein, which seem the most likely to be problematic still.

I'm also assuming that an early start may be required to secure a parking spot...

This is always useful for that area. http://www.benmorewebcam.co.uk/

Looks fine. Was patchy around Starav last Friday but would assume most of that is gone now as well given the temperatures since.

We did Achaladair and a'Chreachain last weekend.Apart from some snow attached to the Northern corries, the summits were clear of snow.Water levels on the Waters of Tulla were also low,so no issues crossing over.

Great. Thanks for the webcam link. Quite a difference compared to some of the Glencoe hills!

The Water of Tulla crossing is the main reason I wanted to do this group now, during the dry spell.

Only very isolated patches on Ben Challum last Friday. More, Stob Binnein and Lui had more cover on their N and E sides, but I would not expect any problems with the normal routes - the snow was in typical spring condition. You might want to avoid high, steep, shady spots, such as the N side of An Stuc and the NE side of Cruach Ardrain.

As for parking, yes, arrive early or pick a less popular start point.

Rannoch Wall... I thought you were asking about the routes on the celebrated wall on Stob Dearg.. BEM... It does face Southwards so I guess not much snow there.:-)
I have never come across the term used outside that
of the Glencoe peak.
But maybe that just shows up my narrow knowledge of this term.:-)

Sorry for the confusion. I thought the Rannoch Wall (or perhaps Wall of Rannoch  ) referred to the hills forming a barrier south of the Water of Tulla. May well be mistaken though :)

Edit: having Googled it, it looks like Rannoch Wall refers to Glencoe, but Wall of Rannoch refers to the Water of Tulla area. Confusing!

Hi denfinella.

I was on top of Meall Glas yesterday.

Not a lot of snow left on the Crianlarich hills.

Yes..that reminds of the days when it was to Glencoe, down Glen Etive, The Ben, Garbh Bheinn or even to Skye when we talked about crossing the Rannoch Moor. Maybe that's how it came about. We kind-of lived very narrow lives everything else were just hills to discover much later and still finding into my dottage.

I was up in Glen Coe a few days ago; there was virtually no snow left, but the wind was so bitterly cold that I believe there could be ice left clinging to the ground. There have been warm sunny days but very cold frosty nights. You would not be able to see ice from lower down in the glen, and it may come as a surprising obstacle once you are up high. That verglas stuff like glass, coated over every path. Maybe best take the old foot fangs anyhoo, just in case.

Gloomy Glen Coe - cold and damp but no snow visible, maybe ice high up.

Rannoch Wall....maybe a bit of French in the origin of this use of the term...the Moor part of it became perhaps Mur and hence Rannoch Wall being applied to the Rannoch Moor.

Did the Rannoch pair as planned today (Beinn a' Chreachain and Beinn Achaladair). All good with no snow issues, burns / rivers easily crossable with dry feet and not much bog - an excellent day.

Thanks again all.

Was there any ice? I was up at Loch Etive, it was lovely and warm in the sunshine but I could see some snow patches high on the hills.

Plenty of snow in the shadier coires, and a few old cornices, but none on the paths.

Still significant snow on Ben Lui, Creuse / Meall a' Bhuiridh and the hills around Ben Nevis.
