Walks near St Abbs

Walks near St Abbs

Postby geordie33 » Thu May 06, 2021 9:50 am

I am fetching a walking group from Durham to the Eyemouth area in the summer.I would like to do a circular walk of 10-12 miles.
Any suggestions?
Also which maps are best for the area-I gather that due to Scotland much better rules on access footpaths are not as clearly defined as on English maps which show public rights of way.
Thanks in anticipation

Check out the Berickshire Coastal Path, there is a good description of the various stages on this website. Not a circular path so may not be what your looking for. It is possible to get back to start points by using public transport, though understand if this option may not sound suitable in the covid age or if you have a very large walking group.

Thanks for that.Yes the group will be 16-18 so public transport might be difficult. Could consider placing cars at each end.I will check it out

The coast path is definitely the main attraction thereabouts, but hard to make a circular route without a load of road walking. Some combination of https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/borders/coldingham-eyemouth.shtml and https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/borders/st-abbs-head.shtml might be worth considering. This might also be useful: https://walkscottishborders.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2016/03/Paths_around_Eyemouth-1.pdf

If you have a route description to follow, then the OS 1:25k map will do you fine, but the mapping on this site is especially good for marking lowland paths: https://www.plotaroute.com/routeplanner

You can park at Pease Bay and do an out and back towards Abbey St. Bathans on the SUW. Goes through some nice woodland or as others have suggested some of the Berwickshire Coastal Path, the Borders bus service is excellent.
