Camping in Glen Dessarry

Camping in Glen Dessarry

Postby Dunfie » Mon May 10, 2021 5:33 pm

I'm looking to get into the Glen Dessarry munros in a few weeks and have been looking at options to camp and break the journey.

The hope was to walk up the glen some evening to the area I've marked with a red cross. Pitch camp for a few hours and then get up early light and see if I can walk all 4 munros (including Sgurr Mor). Does anyone know if the area around the red cross is suitable for camping. If not Is there a better area that might serve me better?

I know there is a bothy but I'm assuming that it will be closed for the foreseeable future.

I think the ground is all quite rough and slopey where your cross is - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1423628
You might be better off along the banks of the main river, either around NM930934 or further back towards the bothy.

If you are planning on including Sgurr Mor, I'm not sure how much camping there really helps - I have done all 4 in a (longish) day from the road end.

Thanks jmarkp

I was thinking that if I could camp near the red cross then there was a chance to store the camping gear in a dry bag and then collect on the way out. :?

Best to measure it up for yourself, but I suspect it doesn't really save you very much effort compared to camping near the old Glendessary Lodge, or doing the whole thing from the roadend.

That’d scupper your chances of Sgurr Mor!

Hiking out from Knoydart I camped around the location you marked, possibly a little further east. There are some large walled fields to the south of the path that are a bit rough but flat enough for a one-nighter and there was a stream close by. Not on my Top 10 list by any means but the path from Sourlies had taken its toll and I was glad of it.

Yes, it would make it a long detour to collect the kit again.

Thanks for the info. Feels like you were at the end of a long day so were glad of a spot to camp.

The more I look at this the more I am leaning towards carrying my kit and having a higher camp along the ridge.

When I did these me and my mate went to Sgurr More first and camped on the ridge between there and An Eag, there was a lochan there for water. Completed the round the following day back to the car.

The area all around where your planning to camp can get quite water sodden if there has been some rain, my preferred way would be to camp higher, been through the area about 7 times it never seems dry, maybe i have just been unlucky.

You can camp on the ridge, eg at the bealach before An Eag. One thing to be aware of is that once you are up on that long ridge there’s very little in the way of water supply, so make sure you have enough with you before you go up.

Camped near the Bothy. The Munros North of the Glen. Camped 2nd night at same place. Had to return in much later life to Get to the three Corbetts.
Through to reach Sgurr Mor the Corbett Fhuarain and Gairich. Down for camp above the Loch Cuaich. The two Munros above next day.
Useful lift out same day. :)

Do you mean between An Eag and Sgurr Cos na-Breachd-laoidh? If so, that location looks vulnerable to strong winds enhanced from funnelling through the bealach given a SWly wind.

Look at the ridge towards Sgurr Beag. At the crossing of the paths there are a couple of lochans at 622 height.
There was a useful outcrop that provided som protection when I was up there.

Thanks for all the replies. Really useful to read your experiences.

At the moment the plan is hopefully to do it over a decent weather weekend and will only be camped for a few hours on the ridge and then up and out in the morning.
