Creag Meagaid?

Creag Meagaid?

Postby Outnabout » Fri May 21, 2021 6:07 pm

We are up in Inverness next week and was looking at the strathfarrar four but decided against it. We have now now decided to the Creag Meagaid circuit , with the kids and the dog with us just wondering if there is anything we need to to be aware of? I see there is a burn to cross is it still passable if we've had a lot of rain. Any parts to watch out for with the dog?

Cheers.

Which burn, There’s loads after all. The one next to Aberarder is bridged from memory.

Sorry don't know any names of the burns in the area, just wondering if there is any that would cause a problem if there is a lot of rainfall prior to the hike.

‘ I see there is a burn to cross’ implied you were aware of one?

I walked this last summer. I can't recall any significant water crossings or burns on the route.

From memory I don't recall any river crossings that would cause any issues, the 'window' is quite bouldery and may have some lying snow. I'd check the detailed route description or the plethora of trip reports on here. 8)

There was still full snow cover on the plateau about 3 weeks ago. It could be much reduced by now, but if not, navigation in poor visibility needs some care.

The only bridge that I can recall was at the very end of a traverse of all the tops in the Horseshoe close to Aberarder. :) In hill areas bridges tend to come and go and maps are not always up to date, as I have found, in my own area of Feshie and Dulnain. Even to the discovery that of differences shown on the Maps of of the two main scales used by walkers.

I can confirm that the bridge W of Aberarder marked on current maps is there in reality! If you descend off Sron a’Choire you will eventually come across a rough ATV track that leads to it.

Thanks for all replies is there anywhere to get updates on whether there is still snow lying on the plateu? What's the walk out like from lochan a'choire looks a fair wee trek back to car.

It's an easy walk out from the lochan, about 3 or 4 miles on a good path.

If you are in Inverness why not try Ben Wyvis which is far nearer and easier day out? No need to be concerned about snow or rivers.

All the best. :D

For snow conditions you might be lucky and find a recent post on here, another of the hill forum sites, or FB groups.

The walk out from the lochan is indeed on a very good path - just be prepared for a short uphill stretch after about 1km!

The path to/from 'The Window' is steep, and very loose and basically scree in places. Not sure I'd fancy taking a dog unless very comfortable in this sort of terrain, ditto kids. Up that way would be better than down. No other issues though.

Forgot to fill up my water bottle so would have remembered a burn . No water sources on the high parts so don't make the same mistake.

I have done this route with my two dogs who had no problems with it whatsoever and that was when there was a fair bit of snow at the window. Mine were belting it down the window and running back up again wondering what was keeping me..... I am not sure how kids would be with it in snow? Perhaps as someone else suggested it might be better to take the route clockwise and assess when you get to it? Never came across any burns tho? Keep it for a good vis day though as its a cracking walk around the circuit :-)
