A bike any use for Beinn Mholach?

A bike any use for Beinn Mholach?

Postby Veryhappybunny » Sat Jun 05, 2021 7:16 pm

Hi
I am thinking of going up Beinn Mholach from the A9, and wondered if a mountain bike was any use to get nearer the hill? it looks like there is some decent track at least at first - does it go on for far enough and would you have to lift the bikes over any big fences?
Thanks

From memory it peters out into a faint path right where the os map shows but is good before that. No gate issues I think.

Either side of Loch Garry works on a bike. East side road goes a bit further south.

Walked down West side of Loch Garry the other week and where it shows the double line track on the map ending I went up onto Meall Doire 715m to walk back over the hills to Dalnaspidal. Weather wasn’t very good but took a couple of photos which may help.

Where main (double line) path on map ends but you can still see it continuing on.

Hope these are of some use.

My westie and i did this and the nearby graham in October last year as a birthday treat.
walked in from dalnaspindal in 2hrs, set up base camp by Duinish Bothy
climbed corbett in less than 3 hrs from base camp and graham in less than 2 hrs.
overnight in tent, woke up afterwards as a 50 yr old, and walked out in less thn 2hrs.
Ballinluig motorgrill for my birthday lunch.

walk in on west side is on a superb track for most of its length, about 1.5hrs walking time - bike would be a doddle to here, last 30mins was wet/boggy until got to bridge/hydro building.

Great area and worth savouring, the views East from Graham Creag a' Mhadaidh over Loch errochty were superb

Great thanks - that looks very good. My mountain bike should be fine with that.

I bikepacked into Duinish for a couple of nights last weekend. Took the west side track along Loch Garry and it was fine, if a bit loose and stony in places, for a mountain bike with some luggage. A gravel bike would be OK at a push but not particularly comfortable.

As folk have mentioned, there is a gap of about a mile between the constructed paths along Loch Garry and those that extend beyond the hydro install on the Allt Shallainn. Even after a dry spell this gap on vague paths was barely cycleable so unless planning to make a lot of use of the better paths on the Mholach side I would be tempted to leave the bike at the end of Loch Garry on a day trip.

Thanks all - I took the bike along the west side of Loch Garry and stopped at the end of the made track. It was very useful, and especially appreciated on the way back. It was a bit rough at times though, especially as I'd accidentally locked my front suspension. 😕
