Multi Day Hikes from Fixed Wild Camp

Multi Day Hikes from Fixed Wild Camp

Postby malrc » Sun Jun 06, 2021 5:54 pm

Hi All,

I'm recently back from an amazing 3 day Loch Mullardoch circuit and have started planning for some future trips.

I'm wondering if people could advise on potential locations for doing 2 or 3 Munro bagging day hikes from a single wild camp base.

Plan would be to hike in with full pack to a wild camp spot and then use a day pack to bag summits from there. I assume good form would be to break camp each morning and stow the gear during the day.

Obviously more than happy if reasonable relocation of camp is required to improve efficiency of the next day's hike, etc.

May seem a strange question, but would like to have the option to move fast during the day, but still enjoy the wild camp experience.

Lots of options in the Cairngorms. You could camp near Corrour bothy and do the munros one side of the Lairig Ghru one day, and the ones the other on the next day.
You could also do much the same at Glen Feshie.
Ditto Dalwhinnie or Glenfinnan.

Would seem an obvious one for me. Others before you have done this.

Glen Nevis works well for this. Steall obvously but often busy. I spent a couple of days in the flat ground north of Binnein Beag, which is a good base for Grey Corries/Eastern Mamores etc..

Loch Etchachan in the Cairngorms.

River Ossian not far from the east end of the Loch, particularly with a bike.

Up the track from Auch as you start to drop towards Loch Lyon.

Coiregrogain for the Arrochar Alps.

I'm just back from 2 nights camping by Culra for Ben Alder and the Geal-charn group, but I see others have already recommended that. Another good spot is by the ruined lodge in Glen Ey for Carn an Righ & co.

It's much easier to bike in to these spots if you can, preferably with the gear stowed on the bike rather than on your back. No problem leaving the tent up for a day or two - just don't leave any trace of your stay behind.

Fisherfield Forest from any direction should give you more than a few options!

Fisherfield and the Cairngorms are the obvious two, you're limiting yourself a bit if you have to return back to your fixed camp location though. If your gear is light enough, you should still be able to move fast enough. 8)

I haven't done it yet but plan Fisherfield by camping in Gleann na Muice and a single Corbett, Chaisgein Mor on day 1.

Day 2 - Fisherfield 6

Day 3 - 2 Corbetts Dearg and back out.

I have my pack weight pretty low, but ultimately, with camping gear and food for a few days, you can't reasonably move anywhere near as fast as you might with a day pack (where I can jog/run on some flats and downhills)

I'm not adverse to relocating the camp of a morning or evening and will certainly continue with full pack multi day efforts also. Just curious regarding any niche areas where efficiency can be improved with day hiking out of a camp (fixed or otherwise).
