Food or something more sinister?

Food or something more sinister?

Please satisfy my curiosity - I'm sure someone will have the answer.

And what purpose do these serve?

... on mounds like this on open ground

Half a dozen of these tubs seen on the Corbett Meall na Leitreach on Sunday - each about 20cm long, 10cm deep and containing granules that look like cat litter and placed on top of a specially made mound.

The volume would seem too small to be a feed supplement.

It's medicated grit. Grouse need grit to help digest their food and this medicated stuff also gets rid of internal parasites.

So you can add that to the lead in your wonderful natural free range grouse next time you dine somewhere fancy.

Its for the grouse, you only ever see them on grouse shooting estates. Google "grouse grit trays" for assorted viewpoints on them.

I believe it's grit for the grouse to eat. Apparently their diet of heather is hard to break down and digest, so they eat grit to help with the process. I've also read that it's often medicated, to help fight off internal parasites.
