Parking for Gairich at Loch Quoich dam

Parking for Gairich at Loch Quoich dam

Postby stuliv83 » Wed Jun 16, 2021 8:34 pm

On driving past the dam this week, on our way to tackle Spidean Mialach and Gleouraich, there was a significant amount of works going on around the dam at Loch Quoich.

Virtually every possible parking space around the dam has been marked off for site use, so anyone planning on tackling Gairich from the WH route starting at the dam may struggle to find a spot.

Haven’t been able to find much info about it online, nor have I seen mention on the forum, so though it was worth a mention.

Thanks for the warning.

Our club has a member looking to finish his third round on Gairich at the end of August so we will have a few cars up the glen that day. We will need to make best use of car sharing (within the rules of course).

Thinking about heading there this weekend. How was the parking at the foot of Spidean Mialach (I hear it's limited) or even further along towards the bridge. I know they also had works there a few years back.

There’s space for about five or six cars at the start of the walk. We were there on a weekday so it was ver quiet - we were the second car there and no one else arrived after us. We didn’t go any further along the road so not sure if there is much further along the road but spots before were limited.

I think there may have been a Landslide near the dam (not sure).
There is limited parking after the dam on the way along to the bridge.

They're replacing a temporary power line pole put in place after the 2018 landslide. All parking above and below the dam is suspended, which I believe makes the masts the nearest safe place, almost 2 miles beyond the dam. Maybe one or two precarious spaces in wide passing places slightly nearer. Looks set to continue until August/September.

I haven't been as far as Spidean Mialach recently, but there should be space for five cars (or a single large campervan) but with a few alternative spaces within a mile up to and just after the bridge.

I’ve been up there thus week. There is space for a few cars about half a mile before the dam and similarly about half a mile after. Especially whilst it’s dry underfoot you can park well off the road and not add too much distance to the walk.

We used a lay-by with a grit bin, just above the dam, about 7 yrs ago..passing it at the weekend past that lay-by is still clear and open..2 cars worth anyway (we camped there too for Gairich) the power line work looks pretty long term so Its worth having a plan b or prepare for a longer walk for Gairich. Parking for Gleur / Spid Mialach has room for 6 or 7 cars with a small lay-by further on that will take a few more. Loads of parking opportunities up around the bridge and beyond for Sgurr a M.

I was along that road in the past couple of days and nobody was about so I stopped briefly for a look and took a few photos. It's the first time I have seen the landslide. Even though it is a while now since it happened, the scale of it all is enough to make you feel very small.
