The Cheviot from Kirk Yetholm???

The Cheviot from Kirk Yetholm???

Postby riason1998 » Sat Jul 03, 2021 1:18 am

Wanting to do the Cheviot at some point over the next week or 2. Anyone have experience of the time it takes to go up all the way from Kirk Yetholm and back again? Planning to take the Pennine way over the Schill and the return leg would include descending to Dunsdale before heading northwest over the college burn back towards Yetholm. It looks just about manageable in a day but I'm restricted by the bus times from Yetholm so it might be bit too risky.

I have only done as far as the Schill from Kirk Yetholm [car park at end of road]. From my track log that took 2 hrs 45 mins to get that far [Pennine Way over White Law] Don't know if that will help with your assessment.

The one thing I would say is that the route over the Cheviot has a great sandstone paving stone path. If you try to descend by another route things may be difficult due to the peat hags on the summit.

Your proposed route is roughly 30km with 1400m of ascent - probably 8-10 hours for most folk.

A long day out that's for sure, but it's very dry on top of cheviot just now, I was there yesterday and the peat bogs were a lot less man eating than usual.

Psychologically I wouldn't like to come down into the College Valley and have the border ridge to cross again, but the Naismith timings don't actually look too bad...
